IELTS Writing Task 1 question
The bar chart below shows the top ten countries for the production and consumption of electricity in 2014.
Summarize the information by selecting and reporting the main features, and make comparisons where relevant.
Student answer (Band 6.5)
The horizontal graph illustrates the top ten nations for the production and consumption of electricity in 2014, measured in billion kilowatt-hours(kwh).
At first glance, China produced as well as consumed higher electricity and ranked first. In most countries, electricity production exceed consumption, with Germany being only the country where consumption was higher than production.
China ranked first, producing approximately 5,398 billion kwh and consuming 5,322 billion kwh. The United states was in second place, generated 4,099 billion kwh and consumed 3,866 billion kwh. The Russia produced and consumed nearly similar amount of electricity, 1,057 and 1,038 respectively.
Japan followed, with electricity production 936.2 billion kwh, compared with consumption of 856.7 billion kwh. Among the other, Canada generated 618.9 billion kwh and consumed 499.9 billion kwh. The France and Brazil were 561.2 and 530.7 billion kwh in production and their consumption levels were 462.9 and 455.8 billion kwh. The Germany produced 526.6 billion kwh but consumed higher around 582.5 billion kwh while the Korea ranked lower among all countries.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.5
You identify the main pattern accurately: China and the United States lead by a wide margin, and production exceeds consumption in nearly every country, with Germany as the exception. Several key figures are reported correctly, including those for China, the United States, Russia, Japan, Canada, France, Brazil and Germany. This gives the response a clear, relevant overview and substantial support. However, India is omitted, and Korea is mentioned only as ranking lower, without its production or consumption figures. The overview could also be more precise by noting the sharp drop from the two leading countries to the rest. The main features are covered, but some comparisons are less fully developed than others.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.0
The response has a clear overall arrangement: an introduction, an overview, and then details moving from the highest-producing countries towards the lower-ranked group. Linking expressions such as “At first glance,” “In most countries,” and “Among the other” help signal the direction of the discussion. However, the final paragraph groups several countries together, making the comparisons less easy to follow, and the transition to Germany and Korea is abrupt. “Among the other” is also an unclear reference. Organise the details into more balanced groups—for example, the two leaders, then the remaining countries—and use clearer links between comparisons. This would make the progression smoother and cohesion less mechanical.
Lexical Resource: Band 6.5
You use an adequate range of task-relevant vocabulary, including “production,” “consumption,” “ranked first,” “followed,” and “generated.” These terms allow you to describe the chart and make basic comparisons clearly. There are also some imprecise or awkward choices: “higher electricity” is not a natural way to describe the largest figures, and “the other” does not clearly identify the countries being discussed. Capitalisation and unit presentation are inconsistent in “United states” and “kwh.” Aim for more precise collocations such as “the highest levels of electricity production and consumption” and “the remaining countries,” while keeping country names and units consistently formatted. The range is sufficient, but greater precision and naturalness would strengthen it.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 6.0
You use a mix of simple and more complex sentence forms, including the overview sentence beginning “In most countries” and comparisons using “with” and “while.” The meaning is generally clear, but some grammatical errors remain. For example, “electricity production exceed consumption” needs subject–verb agreement, and “The United states was in second place, generated…” combines verb forms incorrectly; use “was in second place, generating…” or make it two clauses. Articles are also inconsistent in “The Russia,” “The France,” and “The Germany,” while “with electricity production 936.2” needs a grammatical link such as “with production at 936.2.” Check agreement, articles and sentence construction carefully. More consistently accurate complex sentences would improve control.
