IELTS Writing Task 1 question
The bar chart below shows the top ten countries for the production and consumption of electricity in 2014.
Summarize the information by selecting and reporting the main features, and make comparisons where relevant.
Student answer (Band 6.0)
The bar chart shows the production and consumption of electricity by the top ten countries in the year 2014.
China, ranked 1st with both the highest production and consumption of electricity beating the other countries shown in the bar chart. Followed by, the United States with almost a 1500 points difference in both the production and consumption, resulting its place on the 2nd highest in the chart.
Russia and Japan are competing quite close to eachother with almost the same amount of electricity production and consumption. India comes at the 5th place with an average production that is 871 (billion kWh) and consumption 698 (billion kWh).
The Bottom four countries are in an equal race with France on the upper hand, Brazil and Germany are on the 8th and 9th rank, with a strange difference that is observed in Germany's consumption that is higher than its production. Korea is ranked at the bottom with lowest electricity production and consumption.
In conclusion, all the countries have higher electricity production and lower consumption except Germany.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 5.5
You identify the chart’s subject and report several relevant comparisons, including China and the United States leading, Korea ranking last, and Germany being the exception to the general production-consumption pattern. However, the overview is limited and some details are inaccurate or unclear. The United States’ production and consumption differ by about 233 and 233 billion kWh, not almost 1,500; the larger gap is between the two countries’ totals. The “bottom four” description also overlooks that Germany’s consumption (582.5) is higher than France’s and Brazil’s, and the ranking description is confusing. Develop a clearer overview of the main contrasts and support it with accurate figures for more countries.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.5
The response has a clear overall sequence: an introduction, comparisons among the leading countries, discussion of lower-ranked countries, and a concluding summary. This makes the main direction easy to follow, and phrases such as “Followed by” and “In conclusion” signal relationships between ideas. However, some links are mechanical or awkward, and the grouping of France, Brazil, and Germany as the “Bottom four” is not clearly explained. The sentence about the United States also combines its ranking and numerical comparison in a way that obscures the point. To strengthen progression, organise the body around clear groups—such as the two leading countries, the middle group, and the lower figures—and use transitions that accurately express the comparison.
Lexical Resource: Band 6.0
You use a reasonable range of vocabulary for describing a chart, including “ranked,” “highest,” “production,” “consumption,” and “difference.” These terms generally make the topic clear, and “strange difference” shows an attempt to highlight an unusual feature. Some choices are imprecise or informal for an academic report: “competing quite close,” “equal race,” and “on the upper hand” do not describe the data naturally. “Points difference” is also unsuitable for quantities measured in billion kWh. Use precise comparison language such as “a similar level,” “the smallest figures,” or “a gap of approximately…” and check spelling, including “each other.”
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.0
There are attempts to use more than simple sentences, but control is uneven, and several sentence fragments or faulty constructions make the relationships between ideas less clear. “China, ranked 1st with both the highest…” is not a complete sentence, while “Followed by, the United States…” is another fragment with an unnecessary comma. In “resulting its place on the 2nd highest,” the clause is not grammatically formed, and “Russia and Japan are competing quite close” has an incorrect structure. The final sentence is clearer, but the response would benefit from more consistently complete sentences and accurate comparative forms. Practise joining clauses with “while” or “whereas,” and check each sentence for a clear subject and finite verb.
