IELTS Writing Task 1 question
The bar chart below shows the top ten countries for the production and consumption of electricity in 2014.
Summarize the information by selecting and reporting the main features, and make comparisons where relevant.
Student answer (Band 6.0)
The bar graph compares the production and consumption of electricity in the top ten countries in 2014.
Overall, it is evident that China exceeded other countries in both production and consumption; while, Korea Rep produced and cosumed the least amount of electricity. Germany is the only country within top that has to import electrycity from other countries.
China dominates in both counsumption and production because of its enormus industrial sector. China produced approximately 5398 billion KWh and consumed 5322 billion KWh. US produced around 4099 billion KWh against its 3866 billion KWh consumption, second only to China.
Russia, Japan and India's production was around 1000 billion KWh range and almost all of their production was consumed. Sequentially, the production of Canada, France, Brazil and Germany produced a little over 500 billion KWh of electricity. While all of these countries produced more electricity than demand, Germany had to import electricity from other countries because of its huge demand compared to Production. Conversely, Korea Rep produced 485.1 billion KWh and consumed 449.5 billion KWh, which is the least among top ten countries.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.5
The response identifies the main pattern accurately: China leads both measures, Korea has the lowest production and consumption, and Germany is the exception where consumption exceeds production. The figures for China and the United States are also reported correctly, and the overview gives the reader a clear summary. This meets the task well, with some evidence of the more selective and precise reporting expected at a higher level. However, the grouping of Russia, Japan and India as being in the “around 1000 billion” range is imprecise: India is below 900, while Japan is also below 1,000. The statement that Germany imports electricity is a reasonable inference from the chart, but the explanation about its “huge demand” is not supported by the data. More precise comparisons across the middle-ranked countries would strengthen the report.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.0
The response is organised into a clear introduction, overview and two detail paragraphs, and the information generally progresses from the largest producers to the lower figures. Linking expressions such as “Overall,” “Conversely” and “While” help signal relationships between points. This gives the report a coherent overall arrangement. Some connections are less controlled, however: “While all of these countries produced more electricity than demand” is followed by a sentence that repeats the Germany contrast, and the reference to “all of these countries” is not fully clear because Germany is the exception. The sequence “Russia, Japan and India's production” also compresses several comparisons into one sentence. Use clearer grouping and avoid repeating the same contrast to make cohesion less mechanical.
Lexical Resource: Band 6.0
There is an adequate range of task-related vocabulary, including “production,” “consumption,” “exceeded,” “approximately” and “demand,” and the meaning is generally clear. The writer also attempts more specific language such as “dominates” and “sequentially.” However, several spelling errors—“cosumed,” “electrycity,” “counsumption” and “enormus”—reduce accuracy, while some choices are imprecise or unnatural. “Germany had to import” presents an inference as a fact, and “huge demand compared to Production” is not a natural way to describe the chart’s figures. “Sequentially” does not clearly express the intended comparison. Greater care with spelling and more precise collocations would make the vocabulary more effective and flexible.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 6.0
The response uses a mix of simple and complex forms, including the overview clause “while Korea Rep produced…” and the contrast introduced by “While all of these countries…”. Most sentences remain understandable, and the writer can communicate comparisons using past-tense verbs. Some grammatical errors and punctuation problems remain. In “China exceeded other countries in both production and consumption; while,” the semicolon is incorrectly placed before “while.” “Germany is the only country within top” is missing an article, and “Russia, Japan and India's production was” has an awkward possessive construction and a singular verb with a plural list. The phrase “the production of Canada, France, Brazil and Germany produced” also creates a faulty subject-verb relationship. Revising these structures would improve accuracy while preserving the range attempted.
