Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 4.0
You identify the chart’s subject and report several figures accurately, including the production and consumption values for China, the United States, Russia and Japan. However, the response mainly lists data rather than selecting and summarising the main features: it gives no clear overview of the overall pattern, such as China and the United States being far ahead of the other countries. The statement “There are 7 countries in total” is also incorrect; ten are listed. The report stops during Germany’s figures and does not cover Korea, while Germany’s consumption is higher than its production. To address the task more fully, provide an overview and compare key patterns, including the notable German exception.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 4.0
The response follows the chart’s country order, and the repeated contrast between production and consumption gives the reader a basic way to follow the figures. However, ideas are not arranged into a clear report structure: there is no overview paragraph, and most of the response is one long sequence of country-by-country details. Linking words such as “whereas” and “the next country” are used repeatedly, making the progression mechanical rather than showing meaningful comparisons. The final sentence is incomplete, which leaves the information unfinished. Organise the response into an introduction, a concise overview and one or two comparison-focused detail paragraphs; use links to group countries with similar patterns rather than simply moving down the list.
Lexical Resource: Band 5.0
Your vocabulary is sufficient to identify the topic and describe the two measures, using terms such as “production,” “consumed” and “produced.” However, the range is limited and repetitive: “whereas” appears throughout, and “the next country” is repeatedly used to introduce data. Some phrasing is awkward, including “5,398 electricity is produced” and “of electricity is consumption,” which makes the description less natural. The country list also contains inconsistent capitalisation, such as “china” and “united states.” Build a more varied set of accurate chart-description phrases, for example “generated,” “electricity use,” “stood at,” and “compared with,” and use them selectively to make comparisons clearer.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 4.5
You attempt to connect clauses using “whereas,” and the opening sentence is a clear, complete sentence. However, sentence structures are very repetitive, and frequent errors affect accuracy. For example, “There are 7 countries in total” conflicts with the list that follows, while “in france, the production is 561.2 whereas 462.9 of electricity is consumption” has faulty clause construction. The final sentence, ending “whereas 582.5 of electricity is,” is incomplete. Punctuation and spacing are also inconsistent, with comma splices and missing spaces after commas. Practise writing shorter, complete comparison sentences, checking that each clause has a subject and verb and that punctuation separates the information correctly.
