Summarize the information by selecting and reporting the main features, and make comparisons where relevant.

Student answer (Band 6.0)

The bar graph illustrates the production and consumption of electricity in China, the United states, Russia, Japan, India, Canada, France, Brazil, Germany and Korea republic in 2014.

Overall, China produced and consumed the highest amount of electricity, while Korea republic accounted for the lowest consumption and production of electricity. However, it is noticeable that India's production of electricity was higher than its consumption.

At first glance, China and the United states produced 5,398 billion kwh and 4,099 billion kwh electricity, and used 5,322 billion kwh and 3,866 billon kwh electricity in 2014. In contrast, Korea republic and Germany produced the lowest electricity in the single year. The number shows 485.1 billion kwh and 526.6 billion kwh electricity.

On the other hand, India produced 871 billion kwh electricity and in compare to its production the consumption was very less. The figure depicts 698.8 billion kwh electricity. Lastly, Germany's electricity consumption was higher than its production.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.0

You identify the main extremes accurately: China leads both production and consumption, while Korea has the lowest figures, and you note that Germany is an exception because its consumption exceeds production. The figures given for China, the United States, India and Germany are broadly accurate. However, the overview is incomplete and some comparisons are underdeveloped. For example, you say Germany and Korea produced the lowest amounts, but do not clarify that Korea is lowest and Germany is only among the lower producers. You also omit useful comparisons for Russia, Japan, Canada, France and Brazil. Develop the overview by describing the large gap between the top two countries and the much lower figures for the rest, and report more selected data accurately.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.0

The response has a clear overall structure: an introduction, an overview and two detail paragraphs. The reader can follow the movement from the leading countries to India and Germany, and linking phrases such as “Overall” and “Lastly” help signal progression. However, the organisation of the details is not consistently logical: the paragraph beginning “In contrast” groups Korea with Germany, although their production rankings differ, and the final paragraph returns to Germany after India without a clear comparison framework. Some transitions, including “At first glance” and “On the other hand,” feel mechanical or do not express a precise contrast. Group countries by similar production and consumption patterns, and use references that make each comparison explicit.

Lexical Resource: Band 6.0

You use an adequate range of task-related vocabulary, including “production,” “consumption,” “highest amount,” “lowest,” and “higher than.” These terms make the main comparisons understandable, and “accounted for” shows an attempt to vary expression. Some word choices and collocations are inaccurate or repetitive, however. “Used” is less precise than “consumed” in this context, while “in compare to its production” is not a natural phrase. Repeatedly writing “electricity” after each figure also makes the description less fluent. Use accurate comparison language such as “compared with,” “exceeded,” and “stood at,” and vary how you introduce figures. Check spelling and capitalisation in names and units, including “United States,” “Korea, Republic of,” and “kWh.”

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 6.0

You use a mix of simple and more complex sentence forms, including the contrast clause “while Korea republic accounted for the lowest…” and the comparison “Germany’s electricity consumption was higher than its production.” Most sentences communicate their intended meaning. Some grammatical errors remain, particularly in sentence construction and articles. For example, “China and the United states produced … electricity, and used … electricity” needs a more parallel structure, such as “produced … and consumed …”; “in compare to its production” also has an incorrect grammatical pattern. The phrase “the consumption was very less” uses an unsuitable comparative construction. Practise forming comparisons with “less than,” “lower than” and “compared with,” and check article use and sentence parallelism when reporting paired figures.
