IELTS Writing Task 1 question

The bar chart below shows the top ten countries for the production and consumption of electricity in 2014.

Summarize the information by selecting and reporting the main features, and make comparisons where relevant.

Student answer (Band 6.0)

The provided vertical bar chart delineats the different countries and their contribution in production and comsumption of electricity in 2014. Countries has been ranked according to thier production and consumption of electricity.

China is dominating producer and consumer of electricity, followed by United States. On the contrast, Germany is taking the least number followed by Republic of korea. China, US, Russia, Japan, India, Canada, France, Brazil and Korea produce more electricity than its consumption, whereas Germany produce fewer but comsume more of it.

China produced 5,398 billionkWh and consumed 5,322 which is fewer than production. US producde 4099 billion kWh and consumed 3866 billion kWh. Additionally, Russia, Japan, and India produced 1057,936.2, and 871 billion kWh respectively with consumer value of 1038, 856.7 and 698.8 billion kWh. Furthermore, Canada produced 618.9 and consumed quite less which is 499.9 billion kWh followed by France and Brazil with production of 561.2 and 530.7 respectively with consumption of 462.9 and 455.8 billion kWh. Germany and Korea are at least on the ranking with production of 526.6 and 485.1 while Germany consumed 582.5 and Korea Comsumed more than production which is 499.5 billion kWh.

Overall, China outnumbered other countries in both production and consumption while Korea hold the least number with fewer production and comsumption as compared to other countries, also only country consumed more than its production.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.5

You identify the main pattern clearly: China leads both measures, and production exceeds consumption in nearly all listed countries. The overview also notes Germany’s exception, and the response includes many relevant figures, such as China’s 5,398 versus 5,322 and the US’s 4,099 versus 3,866. This covers the task well, though some details are unclear or inaccurate: Korea’s consumption is given as 499.5 rather than 449.5, and the statement that Germany is “taking the least number” conflicts with its relatively high consumption. The final overview also repeats the least-ranking point without clearly distinguishing production from consumption. More precise comparisons and a concise, accurate overview would strengthen the report further.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.5

The response has a recognisable structure, moving from an introduction and overview to country-level details, and linking expressions such as “Additionally” and “Furthermore” help signal progression. The main comparisons are generally grouped sensibly. However, the long middle paragraph packs many countries and figures into one sentence, making the information difficult to follow; the sequence “1057,936.2, and 871” is especially hard to interpret. Some linking is mechanical, and the final overview repeats information rather than providing a clean summary. Use separate sentences or group countries by scale, and make references such as “which is fewer” explicit. This would make the progression clearer and cohesion less dependent on formulaic connectors.

Lexical Resource: Band 5.5

You use relevant task vocabulary, including “production,” “consumption,” “ranked,” and “respectively,” and attempt more formal expressions such as “dominating producer.” However, spelling and word-choice errors are noticeable: “delineats,” “comsumption,” “thier,” and “producde” recur or distract, while phrases such as “taking the least number” and “on the contrast” are not natural in this context. “Outnumbered” is also unsuitable for comparing electricity quantities. These choices sometimes make the intended comparison less precise, although the topic remains understandable. Focus on accurate spelling and standard chart-report collocations, such as “generated the most electricity” and “by contrast,” before trying more elaborate wording.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.5

You attempt both simple and more complex sentence forms, including a contrast clause with “whereas” and a sentence using “with” to report paired figures. The overall meaning is usually recoverable, but some grammatical errors remain, particularly in agreement and sentence construction. For example, “Countries has been ranked” should use a plural verb, and “Germany produce fewer but comsume more” needs consistent subject–verb agreement and a clearer object. The extended sentence listing Russia, Japan, and India also lacks clear grammatical separation between the figures and their comparisons. Check singular and plural subjects, use complete clauses, and punctuate long lists so that each comparison is easy to parse.
