IELTS Writing Task 1 question
The bar chart below shows the top ten countries for the production and consumption of electricity in 2014.
Summarize the information by selecting and reporting the main features, and make comparisons where relevant.
Student answer (Band 6.5)
The bar diagram illustrates the top ten leading nations for the generation and usage of electricity in 2014 and measured in billion kilowatt-hours (kWh).
Overall, China secured the top country in both categories of production and consumption followed by the Americans, ranked second place. In addition, all the nations production exceeded the consumption except Germany whose consumption surpassed its production.
Chinese by far recorded the highest postion accounted for 5398 kWh in production and 5322 billion kWh in consumtion. Following this, the USA generated 4099 billion kWh and consumed 3866 billion kWh. In contrast, Russia produced and consumed less than one-fifth of China's production accounted for 1057 and 1038 billion kWh. Whereas Japan generated 936.2 and 856.7 billion kWh.
Similarly, India generated 871 and consumed 698.8 billion kWh. In the same way, Canada, France and Brazil generated more power than they consumed. In contrast, Germany consumed (582.5 billion kWH) more power than it generated (526.6 billion kWh). Ultimately, the Republic of Korea recorded the lowest position in both categories accounted for 449.5 billion kWh (consumption) and 485.1 billion kWh (Generation).

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 7.0
You identify the chart’s subject and give a clear overview of its main patterns: China and the United States lead both measures, and Germany is the exception to the general pattern of production exceeding consumption. The figures you select for the major countries are accurate, including the unusually high German consumption and Korea’s lowest production. This gives the report a well-supported account of the key comparisons. To make the coverage more consistently developed, report at least one specific comparison for the middle-ranked countries rather than grouping Canada, France and Brazil together without figures. Also, “less than one-fifth of China’s production” is not a precise comparison for Russia’s consumption; specify that both Russian figures are around one-fifth of China’s.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.5
The response has a clear overall structure: an introduction, an overview, and two paragraphs presenting the figures. The progression from the leading countries to the lower-ranked ones is generally easy to follow, and contrast markers such as “In contrast” help signal comparisons. This coherent arrangement is a strength. However, some linking expressions are repetitive or do not show the relationship precisely: “Similarly” and “In the same way” introduce a list rather than a meaningful similarity, while “Whereas Japan…” is left as a fragment after the Russia sentence. Grouping countries by a clear comparison and connecting each sentence grammatically would make cohesion less mechanical and the progression more fluent.
Lexical Resource: Band 6.0
You use an adequate range of task-related vocabulary, including “generation,” “usage,” “consumption,” “surpassed,” and “recorded,” and the electricity figures remain understandable. There are also attempts at more formal phrasing, such as “secured the top country” and “recorded the lowest position,” but these combinations are not natural in this context. Spelling slips in “postion” and “consumtion,” along with inconsistent capitalisation of “kWh,” reduce accuracy. Aim for precise, conventional chart language rather than ornate expressions: for example, say that China “ranked first” and Korea “had the lowest figures.” More accurate collocations and careful proofreading would strengthen the vocabulary control.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 6.0
You use a mix of simple and more complex forms, including the overview sentence with “except” and comparisons introduced by “whereas” and “in contrast.” Most of the data remains understandable, but some grammatical errors recur. For example, “China secured the top country” has an incorrect construction, and “all the nations production exceeded the consumption” needs a possessive form and more natural article use. “Whereas Japan generated…” is a dependent clause presented as a sentence, and “Following this, the USA generated…” has an unclear reference. Work on complete sentence boundaries, possessives, and accurate clause connections. These improvements would make the range you attempt more consistently controlled.
