IELTS Writing Task 1 question

The bar chart below shows the top ten countries for the production and consumption of electricity in 2014.

Summarize the information by selecting and reporting the main features, and make comparisons where relevant.

Student answer (Band 5.5)

The illustration gives information about the production and consuption of electricity in the top ten countries in 2014. Overall, in all ten countries China and United States showed highest production and consumtion rate. However Germany was the only country in which electricy prouction was less than its consuption.

It is quite evident from the bar graph which showed the relationship between the different countries names and electriciy. From the given data it is clear that China and United states were the countries which revealed that production and consuption were almost high. However, Russia was the country in which production was 1057 billionn kWH and 1038 billion kWH consuption.

Furhermore, others countries like Japan, India, Canada, France, Brazil, Germany and Korea were consider the countries in which production adn consumtion had no high digit. In all these Germany is the only the country in which production rate was lower than that of the consumtion rate and in all given countries korea showed less electricity production and consuption like 485.1 billion kWH and 449.5 billion KWH relatively.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.0

You identify the chart’s subject and give a relevant overview: China and the United States lead both measures, while Germany is the exception because its consumption exceeds production. The Russia figures and Korea’s comparatively low figures are also reported accurately. This covers the main task, but several important comparisons are only broadly described. For example, the statement that the other countries had “no high digit” does not show how production and consumption compare across them, and the United States’ substantial lead over Russia is not highlighted. Include a few precise figures for the leading countries and one or two middle-ranking countries, and make the overview more specific about the large gap between the top two and the rest.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 5.0

The response has a recognisable structure, moving from an introduction and overview to supporting details, and paragraph breaks help separate these functions. However, progression within the body is limited: the second paragraph focuses on Russia, while the final paragraph groups seven countries together without a clear comparison or consistent sequence. Linking words such as “However” and “Furthermore” are used, but they do not always clarify the relationship between ideas, and some repetition of the overview slows the report. Organise the details by meaningful groups—for example, the two leading countries, then the remaining countries—and use comparisons to connect each group. This would make the information easier to follow.

Lexical Resource: Band 5.0

You use relevant chart vocabulary, including “production,” “consumption,” “bar graph,” and “billion kWH,” so the topic is generally clear. However, the range is limited and several word choices or collocations are inaccurate, such as “consumption rate,” “no high digit,” and “showed less electricity production and consumption.” Spelling errors—including “consuption,” “electriciy,” and “Furhermore”—are noticeable and reduce the precision expected in a data report. Prefer concise, standard expressions such as “electricity consumption,” “lower figures,” and “produced less electricity than it consumed.” Check spelling carefully and avoid repeating the same general terms when a precise comparison is available.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.0

You attempt some complex sentence forms, including clauses beginning with “However” and “in which,” and the main message is usually understandable. However, control is uneven. Examples include “China and United States showed highest production,” which needs articles, and “others countries … were consider,” where the plural form and verb form are incorrect. The sentence beginning “It is quite evident …” is also awkwardly constructed, and the final sentence contains several clauses that are difficult to follow. Use a reliable mix of short, accurate comparisons and longer sentences, checking articles, subject–verb agreement, and verb forms. Clearer sentence boundaries would also help prevent ideas from becoming tangled.
