IELTS Writing Task 1 question

The bar chart below shows the top ten countries for the production and consumption of electricity in 2014.

Summarize the information by selecting and reporting the main features, and make comparisons where relevant.

Student answer (Band 6.5)

The given horizontal bar chart illustrates the comparison of top ten countries in term of production and consumption of electricity in 2014, measured in (billion kWh).

Overall, China and United state had the far highest proportion in both production and consumption of electricity. While Korea had the lowest value among the ten countries. Others countries had slightly more production than consumption of electricity.

At first, China had figured the highest in both production and consumption, at 5,398 (billion kWh) and 5.322 (billion kWh). Followed by, America had 4.099 (billion kWh) at production and 3.866 (billion kWh) at consumption. Russia was the third highest in generating 1,057 (billion kWh) and using 1.038 (billion kWh). Japan and India also recorded relatively high amount, Japan produced 936.2 (billion kWh) and consumed 856.7 (billion kWh) and India produced 871 (billion kWh) and consumed 698.8 (billion kWh).

meanwhile, Canada and France had exceeding production than consumption of electricity. Moreover, Brazil was generating 530.7 (billion kWh) and consuming 455.8 (billion kWh). In contrast, Germany was the only country whose consumption was more than production, 526.6 (billion kWh) of production and 582.5 (billion kWh) in consumption. Korea had the lowest figure, 485.1 (billion kWh) of production and 449.5 (billion kWh) of consumption.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 7.0

The response selects the main features clearly: China and the United States lead both measures, Korea is lowest, and Germany is the exception where consumption exceeds production. Most reported figures are accurate, and the comparisons across the leading countries are supported with data. This gives the account a clear overview and relevant detail. Some coverage is less complete, however: Canada and France are mentioned only generally, without their figures, and the statement that “Others countries had slightly more production” overgeneralises the pattern, since the production-consumption gaps vary and Germany reverses it. To strengthen the report further, give a concise comparison of the middle and lower-ranked countries and describe the size of the differences more precisely.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.5

The response has a clear overall structure, moving from an introduction and overview to the highest-producing countries and then the remaining countries. Paragraphing helps distinguish the overview from the detailed comparisons, and linking expressions such as “In contrast” make the Germany exception easy to follow. However, some transitions feel mechanical or awkward: “At first” does not accurately signal the next point, and “Followed by” is left as a fragment-like transition. The final paragraph also groups several countries without giving a consistent pattern of detail. Use more natural sequencing, such as “China ranked first, followed by…,” and organise the figures in a more systematic order to make progression smoother.

Lexical Resource: Band 6.0

The response uses an adequate range of task-related vocabulary, including “production,” “consumption,” “highest,” “lowest,” and “in contrast,” so the comparisons remain understandable. It also attempts more varied expressions such as “recorded relatively high amount” and “figured the highest,” but these are not natural collocations in this context. There are also word-form and phrasing problems, including “in term of,” “United state,” and “Others countries.” These do not prevent understanding, but they reduce precision and naturalness. Prefer standard chart-reporting language such as “ranked,” “generated,” “consumed,” and “the other countries,” and check country names and plural forms carefully.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 6.0

There is a mix of simple sentences and longer structures, including the contrast in “In contrast, Germany was the only country whose consumption was more than production.” Most figures are placed in understandable sentence patterns, and errors rarely obscure the intended meaning. Some grammatical inaccuracies remain, however. For example, “China and United state had” has an agreement and article problem, while “Japan and India also recorded relatively high amount” needs a plural noun. “Followed by, America had…” is not a complete, well-formed transition, and punctuation around the opening overview and “meanwhile” is inconsistent. Continue using complex comparisons, but check subject–verb agreement, articles, plural forms, and sentence boundaries during revision.
