IELTS Writing Task 1 question
The bar chart below shows the top ten countries for the production and consumption of electricity in 2014.
Summarize the information by selecting and reporting the main features, and make comparisons where relevant.
Student answer (Band 6.0)
The given horizontel bar graph illustrates the production and consumption of electricity in 10 different countries. The data has been calibrated into a SI unit scale, that is billion kWh. The dark bar represents production, while the lighter bar showcases consumption of electricity.
Overall, it is clearly seen that, in terms of electric production and consumption, China has the highest values closely followed by the US, while Korea has the lowest values, respectively.
Looking from an overall prespective, China is in the lead for power production and usage, producing a little more energy than it requires, with values of production and consumption at 5.298 and 5.322 kWh ,respectively. Moving ahead, the US produces slightly less power than china, but uses less of it's power, thus, exporting electricity. Russia produces a quarter of the power, compared to the US, with usage and electric creation being almost equal, both at 1 billion kWh. Japan produces less power than Russia, but has more head room for export.
Probing ahead, India produces a substantial amount of electricity, with less usage, and is a major distributor of electricity, with a difference of 0.160 kWh in it's electric use and creation. Similarly, Canada has high electricity production, despite less usage due to low population. France and Brazil generate and use, roughly the same amount of electricity, at around 5 kWh. Germany is the only country in the graph with a lower rate of elecctric generation than it's usage, borrowing electricity from rest of the EU. Republic of Korea has the lowest usage and production of electricity in all listed countries, having just enough production to satisfy it's needs.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.0
You identify the main pattern accurately: China leads production and consumption, while Korea is lowest, and you note that Germany is the exception where consumption exceeds production. However, several figures and comparisons are inaccurate. China’s production is 5,398 billion kWh, not 5,298, and its consumption is 5,322; the units should not be shortened to “kWh” after the figures. France and Brazil are around 500 billion kWh, not “around 5 kWh.” The claim that the US exports electricity is not established by the chart, and the explanation about Canada’s population and Germany borrowing from the EU is unsupported. The overview is relevant, but some country details are unclear or under-developed; report the data more precisely and avoid explanations the chart cannot verify.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.0
The response has a clear overall structure, moving from an introduction and overview to comparisons among the countries. Paragraphing helps the reader follow the account, and transitions such as “Overall,” “Moving ahead,” and “Similarly” signal progression. However, the sequence of country comparisons is not always easy to track, and some linking phrases feel mechanical rather than showing a precise relationship. The second paragraph repeats the overview before the body begins, while the final paragraph combines several countries and claims without a consistent comparison pattern. References such as “it” in “uses less of it’s power” are also unclear. Group countries by scale or by whether production exceeds consumption, and use transitions that make those relationships explicit.
Lexical Resource: Band 6.0
You use a reasonable range of vocabulary for describing the chart, including “production,” “consumption,” “highest values,” “substantial amount,” and “difference.” There are also attempts at less common expressions, such as “in the lead” and “major distributor,” but some choices are inaccurate or unnatural in this context. “Head room for export” and “borrowing electricity” imply information the chart does not provide, while “electric creation” is an awkward substitute for generation. Spelling errors include “horizontel,” “prespective,” and “elecctric.” Use standard chart language consistently, such as “generated,” “consumed,” and “the gap between production and consumption,” and check spelling and collocations carefully.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 6.0
You use a mix of simple and complex sentence forms, including clauses with “while,” “despite,” and “with,” and most of the meaning remains clear. Some grammatical and punctuation errors nevertheless reduce accuracy. For example, “with values of production and consumption at 5.298 and 5.322” needs a clearer construction, and “with usage and electric creation being almost equal, both at 1 billion” has an unclear reference for “both.” Apostrophes are misused in “it’s power” and “it’s electric use,” where the possessive “its” is required. There are also spacing and punctuation problems, such as the space before the comma after “kWh.” Aim for more controlled sentence structures and proofread possessives, references, and punctuation.
