Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 3.0
The response identifies the chart’s subject and gives a broad comparison: China and the United States lead both production and consumption, while Korea is among the lowest. However, it does not adequately summarize the data: there are no figures, comparisons between production and consumption, or other key patterns, such as Germany consuming more electricity than it produces. The overview also says Korea was “on the last place,” which is not accurate for both measures, since it ranks last in production but not consumption. The response is substantially below the required length, leaving the task only minimally addressed. To improve, include a clear overview and select several accurate figures and comparisons from the chart.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 4.5
The response has a basic, sensible order: it first introduces the chart and then gives an overall statement. The paragraph break also separates these functions. However, the development stops after the overview, so there is no organised body paragraph to present and compare the figures. The link “Overall” is appropriate, but the ideas are too limited to show progression across the chart. Build the response with an introduction, an overview, and one or two paragraphs grouping the countries or comparing the largest and smaller values. Use linking expressions to clarify those comparisons rather than relying on a single transition.
Lexical Resource: Band 4.5
The writer uses some task-relevant vocabulary, including “horizontal bar graph,” “generated,” and “used,” which makes the topic recognisable. However, several choices are inaccurate or unnatural: “the give” should be “the given,” “elctricity” is misspelled, and “electricity was originated and spend” does not express production and consumption naturally. “Koreas” is also an incorrect form for the country name. The small vocabulary range limits the ability to describe the chart’s data precisely. Use standard chart language such as “electricity production,” “consumption,” “highest,” and “lowest,” and check spelling and collocations before finishing.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 4.5
The response includes a simple introductory clause and an overview sentence, and the main message can generally be understood. However, grammatical control is uneven. In “the highest number of electricity was originated and spend,” the passive construction and verb forms are faulty; “was produced and consumed” would be grammatically appropriate. The phrase “by the China and US” also has an unnecessary article before China, while “Koreas was” has a number/agreement problem. The sentence structures are very limited, with little evidence of controlled complex forms. Practise accurate passive constructions and subject–verb agreement, then use a wider range of sentence patterns to compare the figures.
