IELTS Writing Task 1 question
The bar chart below shows the top ten countries for the production and consumption of electricity in 2014.
Summarize the information by selecting and reporting the main features, and make comparisons where relevant.
Student answer (Band 6.0)
The given bar chart illustrates the comparison of ten countries for production and consumption of electricity in 2014. The data has been given in billion kWh.
Overall, china had genrate and consume the highest energy while Korea generate and consume the lowest amount of energy.
At first glance, china had generated and consumed the highest amount of energy which is 5398 billion kWh and 5322 billion kWh ,respectively, followed by US genrating 4099 and consuming 3866 billion kWh. Russia had generate and consume almost similar amount of energy with over 1038 billion kWh. India and canada had originated 871 billion kWh and 618.9 billion kWh and utilized 698.8 billion kWh and 499.9 billion kWh, respectively.
Moving ahead, japan's consumption and genrated enery had a difference of 120 billion kWh. However korea had produced and consume the least enery with 485.1 billion kWh and 449.5 billion kWh orderly. France, Brazil and Germany had produced the enery over 520 billion kWh. France and Brazil used enery under 470 billion kWh while Germany used 582.5 billion kWh.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.0
You identify the chart’s main pattern: China leads both production and consumption, while Korea has the lowest figures, and you include several relevant comparisons. The figures for China, the United States, India and Canada are reported accurately. However, some details are incomplete or imprecise: Russia’s production and consumption are both around 1,000 billion kWh, but “over 1038” does not clearly report both values; Japan’s difference is closer to 80 billion kWh, not 120; and the statement that France, Brazil and Germany each produced over 520 overlooks Germany’s figure of 526.6 only narrowly and does not distinguish their values. The overview is relevant, but a clearer comparison of the large gap between the top two countries and the rest would make the key features more fully developed.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.0
The response has a clear overall structure: an introduction, an overview, and two paragraphs presenting country figures. Sequencing from the leading countries to the remaining comparisons helps the reader follow the report, and words such as “Overall,” “respectively” and “However” provide some signposting. Cohesion is not always smooth, though. “At first glance” and “Moving ahead” are somewhat mechanical transitions, and the second body paragraph moves quickly from Japan to Korea and then to three other countries without a clear grouping principle. Some references, such as “which is 5398,” could be made more precise by naming the production and consumption figures directly. Grouping countries by output level or by notable differences would strengthen progression.
Lexical Resource: Band 5.5
You use a reasonable range of task-related vocabulary, including “production,” “consumption,” “respectively,” “difference” and “utilized,” so the main comparisons remain understandable. However, several word-choice, spelling and word-form problems reduce precision: “genrate,” “genrating,” “enery” and “orderly” are inaccurate, while “originated” is not a natural substitute for electricity production. “Had generated and consumed” is also an awkward choice for describing chart data. Repetition of “energy” and “amount” limits flexibility, and “used energy” is less precise than “consumed electricity.” Aim for accurate collocations and consistent spelling, and use the chart’s terms—“electricity production” and “electricity consumption”—rather than varying them with unsuitable synonyms.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.5
You attempt a mix of simple and more complex forms, including the opening comparison and the sentence using “while,” and the overall meaning is generally clear. Some grammatical errors remain, particularly in verb forms and tense consistency. For example, “Korea generate and consume” should use matching past forms, while “Russia had generate and consume” has an incorrect participle after “had.” The repeated use of “had generated” is also unnecessary when describing the chart; simple past forms would be more natural and consistent. There are occasional issues with articles, capitalization and punctuation, as in “china” and the space before the comma in “kWh ,respectively.” Continue practising accurate past-tense reporting and check sentence punctuation, while retaining the variety of sentence structures you attempt.
