Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 5.0
You identify the chart’s subject and give a basic overview, correctly noting that China leads both measures and that Korea has the lowest figures. Several relevant comparisons are included, such as the United States ranking second and India being fifth. However, the report covers the data only partially and some details are inaccurate or unclear: Russia and Japan are not both around 1,000 and 9,000 respectively; Japan’s figures are below 1,000, and the stated 9,000 is a substantial misreading. Germany is also not simply equal to Brazil: its consumption is higher than its production and is the only listed country where consumption exceeds production. Select the key contrasts more carefully and report them accurately.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 5.5
The response has a recognisable structure, with an introduction, an overview and two paragraphs of details. Sequencing from the highest-ranked countries to the lower-ranked ones helps the reader follow the chart, and phrases such as “To commence with” and “Finally” signal progression. However, the organisation is somewhat mechanical, and the comparisons within paragraphs are not always clearly connected. The overview repeats the same idea as the opening detail rather than summarising the main pattern, while the final paragraph groups Brazil and Germany as similar without explaining their important difference. Use clearer grouping and linking, and make each paragraph develop a distinct comparison.
Lexical Resource: Band 5.0
You use relevant chart vocabulary, including “production,” “consumption,” “scale,” and “rank,” so the topic is generally clear. However, the range is limited and several phrases are repeated, particularly “production and consumption of electricity.” Some word combinations are unnatural or imprecise, such as “was large production,” “very less,” and “was 6th rank.” There are also spelling errors, including “electicity,” and country names should be capitalised consistently. Use more precise reporting language and vary the terms for describing figures and comparisons; this would make the account clearer and more appropriate for an academic chart summary.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.0
Most sentences use simple structures, and the reader can usually understand the intended comparisons. However, errors are frequent, and attempts to form longer sentences are often faulty. For example, “china was large production and consumption” lacks a suitable verb construction, while “The production and consumption of electricity United states was second rank” has an unclear subject and incorrect sentence structure. Subject–verb agreement is also inconsistent in “Russia and japan was,” and punctuation is missing after the opening sentence. Practise accurate patterns such as “China produced and consumed…” and “The United States ranked second, with…”. Greater control of articles, agreement and sentence boundaries is needed.
