IELTS Writing Task 1 question

The bar chart below shows the top ten countries for the production and consumption of electricity in 2014.

Summarize the information by selecting and reporting the main features, and make comparisons where relevant.

Student answer (Band 5.5)

the supplied bar graph demonstrates the comparative data about the consumption and the production of electricity from the high rank ten countries in 2014. looking at the overall picture, it is evident that all the countries manufacture more energy then the consumption, while the germany utilize it more then the production. however, china was at top rather then other countries and it is compared with billion kwh.

the top five ranked countries, china was recorded almost at number 1, which generated 5398 billion kwh and use 5322 billion kwh from it. united states was recorded at second ranked, and russia was at third place. furthermore, japan was recorded at forth place, while india was at fifth place.

other five countries, canada was recorded at sixth place with 618.9 billion kwh electricity generation. respectively, france was recorded at seventh place and brazil was at eigth place. although al the countries produce more electicity, germany consume more energy then the production and was at ninth place. korea was recorded at lowest place from the data with the 485.1 billion kwh of electricity.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 5.5

You identify the main pattern that China leads the rankings and that Germany is the exception, and you include accurate production and consumption figures for China. However, the overview is partly inaccurate: “all the countries manufacture more energy then the consumption” overlooks Germany, which you do mention later, and the chart shows Germany’s consumption (582.5) exceeding production (526.6). Most other countries are listed by rank without comparing their figures, so key features are under-developed. For example, the United States is a distant second, while output and use fall sharply after Russia; these important contrasts are not explained. Include a concise overview and select several meaningful comparisons, using accurate figures beyond China.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.0

The response has a generally clear structure: an introduction and overview are followed by paragraphs covering the top five and the remaining countries. This makes the information reasonably easy to follow. However, progression is weakened because the body mostly lists rankings rather than developing comparisons between production and consumption. Linking expressions such as “furthermore,” “respectively,” and “although” are used, but some feel mechanical or do not clearly connect the ideas; “respectively” does not introduce a specific paired comparison. References such as “it” in “use 5322 billion kwh from it” are also unclear. Group countries around meaningful patterns and use linking words only where they express a precise relationship.

Lexical Resource: Band 5.5

You use relevant chart vocabulary, including “production,” “consumption,” “generated,” “ranked,” and “recorded,” and the reader can generally understand the intended meaning. However, the range is limited and several choices or collocations are inaccurate or repetitive. “High rank ten countries” is an awkward way to describe the leading countries, while “manufacture more energy” is not a natural collocation for electricity generation. Repeated use of “was recorded” also makes the report sound formulaic. There are noticeable spelling errors, including “electicity,” “eigth,” and “al,” and inconsistent capitalisation of country names and units. Use precise chart language such as “the ten leading countries,” “generated,” and “consumed,” and check spelling and capitalisation.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.0

You attempt some complex sentence forms, including “although all the countries produce more electricity, Germany consume more energy…,” and the response is usually understandable. However, grammatical control is inconsistent, with frequent errors in agreement, articles, tense, and sentence construction. For example, “Germany utilize” and “Germany consume” need singular verb forms, while “China was at top” needs an article. The opening sentence lacks capitalisation, and “the top five ranked countries, China was recorded…” is not a well-formed sentence because the introductory phrase does not connect grammatically to its subject. Most sentences follow similar simple patterns, and attempts to combine ideas are often faulty. Practise accurate subject–verb agreement and build clear comparisons using controlled complex sentences.
