Student answer (Band 5.5)

The bar chart illustrates the top ten asian and western countries for the production and consumption of electicity in year 2014.

Overall, China by far, has been accounted for the largest share in producing and consuming the electicity in 2014, followed by the United States. Other 8 countries holds relatively smaller share than China and U.S.

Electricity has been consumed and produced by China, significantly the most with 5398 and 5322 kWh, respectively. United State has been accounted for the second largest share of 4099 and 3866 kWh. Although, Japan and India has been accounted for smaller share, little over and under 1000 kWh.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 5.0

You identify the chart’s main feature: China leads both production and consumption, with the United States second. You also include several relevant figures, such as China’s 5,398 and 5,322 and the US figures of 4,099 and 3,866. However, the response only partially reports the data: the comparison of Japan and India is vague, and the final paragraph groups countries together without accurately distinguishing their values. Germany is especially important because its consumption (582.5) exceeds its production (526.6), but this exception is omitted. The description also incorrectly calls all ten countries Asian and Western. The response is 20 words below the required minimum, and the ending is incomplete. Add a fuller overview and precise comparisons across the remaining countries.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.0

The response has a recognisable structure: an introduction, an overview, and paragraphs giving details. This makes the main message reasonably easy to follow, and phrases such as “Overall” and “Other countries” help signal movement between points. However, the progression becomes less clear in the final paragraph, where several countries are grouped together and the sentence ends abruptly at “wh”. Some linking is also awkward or mechanical, as in “Although, Japan and India…”, which does not connect smoothly to a complete main clause. Organise the details into clearer comparisons—for example, the leading countries, then the lower-ranked group—and ensure each paragraph and sentence is complete.

Lexical Resource: Band 5.5

You use relevant chart vocabulary, including “production”, “consumption”, “largest share” and “relatively smaller”, so the topic is generally clear. There is some repetition of “has been accounted for” and “share”, however, and several choices are inaccurate or unnatural: “top ten asian and western countries” misclassifies the group, while “electicity” is misspelled. “Close to 600, 500 and 400 kWh” is also too imprecise for the comparisons being made. Use a wider set of accurate reporting verbs and comparison phrases, such as “generated”, “used”, “exceeded” and “approximately”, and check spelling and collocations. This would make the description more precise and easier to interpret.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.0

You attempt both simple and more complex forms, including the overview sentence and the contrast beginning “Although”. However, control is uneven, and errors sometimes make relationships between ideas unclear. For example, “China by far, has been accounted for” has misplaced punctuation and an unsuitable passive construction; “Other 8 countries holds” has subject–verb disagreement; and “Japan and India has been accounted for” also has disagreement. The “Although” clause is left without a properly connected main clause, and the final sentence is incomplete. Practise forming direct comparisons with accurate subjects and verbs, such as “China produced and consumed the most electricity,” and proofread agreement, clause structure and sentence endings.
