IELTS Writing Task 1 question

The bar chart below shows the top ten countries for the production and consumption of electricity in 2014.

Summarize the information by selecting and reporting the main features, and make comparisons where relevant.

Student answer (Band 6.0)

The bar chart compares the consumption and production of electricity among ten different countries in 2014, measured in billion kilowatt-hours( kWh).

Overall, the graph shows that China and United States are the top production and consumers respectively, while the Republic of Korea has the lowest number in both categories among others. Also, the electricity production exceeds the consumption in nine of the ten countries, Germany being the only exception.

Looking at the first two leading countries, China generated 5,398 billion kwh of electricity and consumed 5,322 billion kwh, making lead in both categories. The United States stood second position, where the production is 4,099 billion kwh and consumption is 3,866 billion kwh.

The remaining countries recorded the lower number among all in both category. So, Germany is the only country where consumption, at 582.5 billion kwh is higher than production, at 526 billion kwh. The country with highest consumption and production is at the top and the one with lowest is at the bottom respectively.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.0

You identify the main pattern accurately: China and the United States lead both measures, and production exceeds consumption in all countries except Germany. The figures for the two leading countries and Germany are also reported correctly, giving the response relevant support. However, the overview says Korea has the lowest figures, while the chart’s lowest production is Korea’s but its lowest consumption is also Korea’s—this is accurate, though the comparison could be stated more precisely. More importantly, the middle-ranked countries are grouped as having “lower number” without reporting useful comparisons or figures, and the final sentence repeats the ranking rather than adding a key feature. Develop this section by comparing the substantial drop after the US and noting India’s or Japan’s position.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.0

The response has a clear overall structure: an introduction, an overview, and paragraphs covering the leading countries and the remaining data. The progression from the general pattern to specific examples is easy to follow, and linking phrases such as “Overall,” “Looking at,” and “So” help signal movement between points. However, the final paragraph groups several countries together without explaining their relative positions, then shifts abruptly to the repeated statement that the highest and lowest countries are at the top and bottom. “The remaining countries” is also a broad reference that does not guide the reader through the data. Organise the middle-ranked countries into a meaningful comparison and remove the repetitive closing sentence to make progression more purposeful.

Lexical Resource: Band 6.0

You use an adequate range of task-related vocabulary, including “compares,” “generated,” “consumed,” “leading,” and “exception.” These choices make the main comparisons understandable, and the units are identified. Some phrasing is imprecise or unnatural, however: “top production and consumers” combines unlike categories, “making lead” is not idiomatic, and “recorded the lower number among all” is vague. Repeated use of “country,” “number,” and “category” also limits flexibility. Use precise terms such as “highest producers and consumers,” “ranked second,” and “figures were lower than those of China and the US.” Keep abbreviations and unit formatting consistent, and use “Republic of Korea” or “South Korea” consistently rather than switching between forms.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 6.5

You show a mix of simple and more complex sentence forms, including the contrast in “Germany being the only exception” and the clause beginning “where the production is…”. Most sentences communicate the intended comparisons, and the response is generally easy to understand. Some grammatical errors remain: “China and United States are” needs an article before “United States”; “making lead” lacks the required article and construction; and “The remaining countries recorded the lower number… in both category” has problems with comparison and plural agreement. Tense also shifts from past reporting (“generated”) to present (“the production is”). The final sentence is structurally awkward and repeats information. More consistent past-tense reporting and careful checking of articles, agreement, and sentence construction would strengthen accuracy.
