IELTS Writing Task 1 question
The bar chart below shows the top ten countries for the production and consumption of electricity in 2014.
Summarize the information by selecting and reporting the main features, and make comparisons where relevant.
Student answer (Band 5.5)
The bart chart compares the production and consumption of electricity among top ten countries in the terms of billion KWH. In the year 2014.
Overall, it is crystal clear that the maximum amount of electricity is produced and consumed in China. Whereas Korea is the least producer of electricity. However Germany consumes more electricity beyond its consumption.
In the year 2014, China produced 5,398 billion KWh which was sufficent for them due their consumption which was 5,322 billion KWH. In the United states they have produced more electricity as their consumption of electricity of that year was only 3,866 billion KWH and they produced 4,099 billion KWh. In the Russia they had produced similar amount of electricity that they consumed. India produced almost 871 billion KWh of electricity which was far more then their consumption.
In the Germany there was little differance simply because their consumption of electricity was more then they produced in that year as per they produced only 526.6 billion kwh consumption was 582.5 billion KWh.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 5.5
You identify the chart’s main leaders accurately: China has the highest production and consumption, and you compare its figures with those of the United States. The Russia and India examples also reflect the data broadly, and the Germany comparison correctly notes that consumption exceeds production. However, the overview is incomplete and partly unclear: “Korea is the least producer” refers only to production, while Korea also has the lowest consumption; Germany is the only country where consumption is higher than production, an important overall feature you could state directly. Several countries and useful comparisons are omitted, and “similar amount” for Russia would be stronger with figures. More complete coverage and a clearer summary of the main patterns would make the response more fully developed.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 5.5
The response has a recognisable structure, with an introduction, an overview and paragraphs giving examples, so the reader can follow its general purpose. The China and United States figures are grouped together, and Germany is separated as a contrasting case. However, progression is limited: the body moves from Russia to India and then Germany without a clear organising principle, and most countries are not covered. Some linking is awkward or unclear, particularly “Whereas Korea is the least producer” and “However Germany consumes more electricity beyond its consumption.” Use clearer transitions and organise comparisons—for example, countries where production exceeds consumption versus Germany, where the reverse is true. This would make the relationships between points easier to follow.
Lexical Resource: Band 5.5
You use relevant chart vocabulary such as “production,” “consumption,” “produced,” and “consumed,” and the repeated use of the unit helps keep the topic clear. However, the range is limited, and several word choices or collocations are inaccurate enough to make parts of the report difficult to interpret. “Least producer” is not a natural way to describe the lowest figure, while “consumes more electricity beyond its consumption” does not express the intended comparison. There are also noticeable spelling and form errors, including “bart,” “sufficent,” “differance,” and “then” where “than” is needed. Aim for precise comparison language and check spelling before finishing.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.0
You attempt some longer sentences and use past-tense forms to describe the 2014 data, but control is inconsistent. The opening is split into a fragment: “In the year 2014.” The overview also contains an incomplete contrast beginning “Whereas,” and the sentence about Germany has a faulty comparison structure. Other examples include “In the Russia they had produced” and “as per they produced,” where articles, sentence structure and clause connections are not controlled. Punctuation and capitalisation are also inconsistent. Practise writing complete sentences with a clear subject and verb, and use straightforward comparative patterns such as “Germany consumed more than it produced.”
