IELTS Writing Task 1 question

The bar chart below shows the top ten countries for the production and consumption of electricity in 2014.

Summarize the information by selecting and reporting the main features, and make comparisons where relevant.

Student answer (Band 6.5)

The given bar chart depicts generation and utilization of electricity by top ten countries around the world in 2014.

Overall, China was the country to produce and consume highest units of electricity whereas, Korea Republic became last in the list. Interestingly, all countries except Germany were generating more power than they utilized.

China being the largest producer of electricity generating 5398 billion kWh, also was the largest consumer utilizing 5322 billion units among all the given countries. Following to China, United States generated 4099 and consumed 3866 billion units of electricity. Japan established third palce and followed up by Inida. Whereas, Korea Republic generated 485.1 and utilized 449.5 billion kWh of electricity securing the last palce while comparing with top ten countries.

In contrast, Germany consumed more electricity than it produced. Production and consumption accounted for 526.6 and 582.5 billion units of electricity, respectively. Countries like Canada, France and Brazil secured sixth, seveth and eight place in the rank.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 7.0

You identify the main pattern accurately: China leads both production and consumption, Korea is lowest, and Germany is the exception to the general pattern of production exceeding consumption. The figures you give for China, the United States, Germany and Korea match the chart. You also report the ranking positions of Canada, France and Brazil. However, the middle-country comparisons are only partly developed: Japan is described as third and India as following, but their figures and the Russia data are omitted, so the reader gets little sense of the substantial drop after the United States. To strengthen the response, include a few representative figures for Russia, Japan and India and compare the scale of their output with the two leading countries and the lower-ranked group. The overview is clear and relevant, though “highest units” could be stated more precisely as the highest production and consumption levels.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.5

The response has a clear overall arrangement: an introduction, an overview, and two detail paragraphs. The progression from the leading countries to the exception and lower-ranked countries is generally easy to follow, and linking phrases such as “Overall” and “In contrast” help signal the main points. This coherent structure is a strength. However, some connections are abrupt or imprecise. “Following to China” introduces the United States, then “Japan established third place and followed up by India” gives little explanation of how these countries compare. The final sentence lists Canada, France and Brazil without linking their ranks to the earlier figures. Use clearer transitions and group countries by meaningful production levels, while ensuring each paragraph develops a connected comparison rather than adding isolated facts.

Lexical Resource: Band 6.0

You use a reasonable range of task-related vocabulary, including “generation,” “utilization,” “producer,” “consumer,” and “accounted for.” These choices make the subject clear, and the repeated use of production and consumption terminology is appropriate for a chart report. However, some expressions are inaccurate or unnatural, such as “highest units,” “Following to China,” and “secured the last place.” There are also spelling errors in “palce,” “Inida,” “seveth,” and “eight,” which reduce precision. Aim for standard chart-report collocations and accurate country names and ranking terms. For example, describe China as having the highest figures, say the United States “ranked second,” and state that Korea “recorded the lowest levels.”

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 6.0

You attempt a mix of sentence forms, including a complex overview sentence with “whereas” and a contrast sentence about Germany. The main comparisons remain understandable, and several clauses communicate the figures clearly. Some grammatical errors nevertheless affect accuracy and naturalness. In “China was the country to produce and consume highest units,” the superlative construction is incomplete; “China produced and consumed the most electricity” is clearer. “China being the largest producer … also was the largest consumer” is a fragment-like opening, and “Japan established third place and followed up by India” has an unclear verb construction. The comma after “whereas” in the overview is also unnecessary. Practise complete sentence structures and consistent past-tense reporting, while retaining the complex forms you are beginning to use.
