IELTS Writing Task 1 question
The bar chart below shows the top ten countries for the production and consumption of electricity in 2014.
Summarize the information by selecting and reporting the main features, and make comparisons where relevant.
Student answer (Band 6.5)
The bar graph illustrates the top ten countries involved in the generation and utilization of electricity in the year 2014. Overall, China has been ranked at number one followed by United States at number two, while Korea is ranked at number ten with lowest levels of electricity production and its usage.
Most of the electricity production and consumption occured in China where 5,398 billion kWh electricity was produced while 5,322 billion kWh was consumed in 2014. Meanwhile, United States had 4,099 billion kWh electricity generation and 3,866 billion kWh utilization, taking the second place in the ranking. Russia is at the third place, while Japan, India, and Canada are at the fourth, fifth and sixth position, respectively.
There is only a little difference in production and consumption levels between France, Brazil and Germany but, Germany has more consumption rate then its production rate. Whereas, Korea Rep. has the lowest rate of electricity generation and usage making it ranked at the tenth.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.0
You identify the main ranking pattern accurately: China and the United States lead, while Korea has the lowest figures, and you support the leading countries with correct production and consumption values. The overview is relevant, and you also note Germany’s unusual pattern, where consumption exceeds production. However, several lower-ranked countries are only listed by position, so their data are not compared in much detail. The statement that France, Brazil and Germany have “only a little difference” is also broad and does not clarify that Germany’s consumption is notably higher than its production. To strengthen the report, select and compare a few more key figures, especially the contrast between Germany and the other countries, rather than relying mainly on rankings.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.5
The response has a clear overall structure: an introduction and overview are followed by details about the leading countries and then the lower-ranked group. The sequence from China and the United States to Russia, Japan, India and Canada is easy to follow, and linking expressions such as “Overall,” “Meanwhile” and “Whereas” help connect ideas. This organisation is effective, though the final paragraph combines several countries without clearly separating their comparisons, and “Whereas” begins a fragment-like transition rather than a fully integrated contrast. More explicit links between the figures and the comparisons would make progression smoother. Overall, the reader can follow the report, but cohesion is not consistently flexible or precise.
Lexical Resource: Band 6.0
You use an adequate range of task-related vocabulary, including “generation,” “utilization,” “production,” “consumption” and “ranked,” so the topic remains clear. There are also attempts to vary wording rather than repeat the chart labels. However, some choices are inaccurate or unnatural: “consumption rate” is less suitable for these totals, and “has been ranked at number one” is awkward in this context. “Then” is used where “than” is required, and “occured” is misspelled. These slips do not prevent understanding, but they limit precision and naturalness. Prefer standard chart-reporting collocations such as “electricity output,” “consumed,” and “ranked first,” and check spelling and comparative forms.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 6.5
You use a mix of simple and more complex sentence forms, including a subordinate clause in “where 5,398 billion kWh electricity was produced” and a contrast in the final paragraph. Most meanings remain clear, and the figures are generally presented in understandable sentences. Some grammatical errors persist, however. For example, “followed by United States” needs an article, and “at the fourth, fifth and sixth position” has a number-agreement problem. The construction “Whereas, Korea Rep. has…” is not smoothly attached to the preceding sentence, while “Germany has more consumption rate” also has an awkward grammatical pattern. Aim for more consistently complete sentences and check articles, agreement and clause connections.
