IELTS Writing Task 1 question

The bar chart below shows the top ten countries for the production and consumption of electricity in 2014.

Summarize the information by selecting and reporting the main features, and make comparisons where relevant.

Student answer (Band 5.5)

The under mentioned bar chart demonstrates the generation and usage of electricity by the top ten nations.

The analysis of the bar chart shows us that China tops the table by generating 5398 billion kWh Electricity followed by USA and Russia which generates 4099 and 1057 billions kWh respectively. Among other countries are Japan,India,Canada,France,Brazil,Germany and Korea, which is on the bottom of the table. But the chart also illustrates that these countries also consumes the same amount of electricity as much as they produce. The overall consumption is almost close to the production.

One interesting thing about Germany is that their consumption of electricity is considerably larger than production. The report also highlights that how China and USA are far ahead in this Bar Chart as their production and consumption is immensely higher than others.

By viewing the Bar Chart we can say that China and USA are far more superior than other countries in term of Technology, Infrastructure and Development by analysing their usage and generation of electricity.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 5.5

You identify the chart’s subject and report the leading producers, correctly noting China, the United States and Russia, as well as Germany’s unusual pattern of consumption exceeding production. However, the response only partly summarises the main features: it gives few comparisons across the remaining countries and does not report consumption figures or explain that production is generally slightly higher than consumption. The claim that other countries consume “the same amount” they produce is too broad, particularly for India, Canada and France, where the gaps are noticeable. The final claim about technology, infrastructure and development is not supported by the chart. A clearer overview and a few accurate comparisons would make the summary more complete and focused.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 5.5

The response has a basic sequence: an introduction, a paragraph describing leading countries and general patterns, and a final observation about Germany and the two leaders. Linking expressions such as “followed by,” “But,” and “One interesting thing” help connect points. However, the progression is not consistently clear because several different functions—ranking, consumption, and an unsupported explanation about development—are mixed together. “But” does not clearly signal a contrast after the list, and “The report also highlights” repeats the preceding point about China and the USA. Organise the response into a concise overview followed by grouped comparisons, and use references such as “these figures” only when their meaning is clear.

Lexical Resource: Band 5.5

You use some relevant chart vocabulary, including “generation,” “usage,” “production,” “consumption,” and “considerably larger,” so the topic is generally clear. There is also an attempt to vary wording with “tops the table” and “far ahead.” However, several choices are awkward or imprecise for an academic data summary: “under mentioned,” “the report,” and “far more superior” sound unnatural, while “same amount … as much as” is repetitive. Capitalisation is inconsistent in “Bar Chart,” and “billions kWh” is not the appropriate form. Prefer precise, neutral expressions such as “produces,” “consumes,” and “substantially exceeds,” and avoid claims about technology that the chart cannot establish.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.5

You attempt both simple and more complex sentences, including a relative clause in “countries … which is on the bottom of the table” and a contrast in the sentence about Germany. Meaning is usually recoverable, but errors in agreement and sentence construction are noticeable. For example, “USA and Russia which generates” should use a plural verb, and “these countries also consumes” has a subject–verb agreement error. “The overall consumption is almost close to the production” is awkwardly constructed, while “highlights that how” uses an incorrect clause pattern. Check singular and plural subjects, and use direct structures such as “The chart shows how…” or “Consumption was close to production.” More consistently accurate complex sentences would strengthen the response.
