IELTS Writing Task 1 question

The bar chart below shows the top ten countries for the production and consumption of electricity in 2014.

Summarize the information by selecting and reporting the main features, and make comparisons where relevant.

Student answer (Band 6.0)

The bar chart compares top 10 countries for production and consumption of electricity in 2014.

Overall, China and United States were accounted for the highest ranking of the production and consumption of electricity over the period. However, Korea produced less electricity in all the ten countries.

In 2014, China generated 5,398 billion kWh electricity and used 5,322 billion kWh, whereas US produced more than 4000 billion kWh electricity and used only 3.866 billion kWh. The production and consumption of electricity in Russia, Japan and Korea was approximately same.

While India did not use electricity as much as it was generated in 2014. They generated 871 billion kWh and used only 698.8 kWh. Likewise, Canada, France and Brazil also consumed less electricity as compare to the production which was round about 5 and 6 billion kWh. However, Germany was the only country who consumed more electricity than its production as they generated only 526.6 billion kWh and used 582.5 billion kWh.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.0

You identify the chart’s subject and give a relevant overview: China and the United States lead both measures, while Germany is the exception where consumption exceeds production. Several comparisons are supported with figures, including China and India, and the Germany figures are reported accurately. However, some details are unclear or inaccurate: “3.866 billion kWh” for US consumption should be 3,866 billion, and “round about 5 and 6 billion kWh” for Canada, France and Brazil substantially understates their values, which are roughly 450–620 billion. The claim that Korea produced the least is correct, but the comparison of Russia, Japan and Korea as “approximately same” is too broad. Select and report the lower-country figures more precisely to make coverage more complete.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.0

The response has a clear overall arrangement: an introduction, an overview, and paragraphs comparing the leading countries and the remaining group. Linking expressions such as “Overall,” “whereas,” “While,” and “Likewise” help show contrast and sequence. The main progression is understandable, but some connections are not fully controlled. “While India did not use electricity as much as it was generated” is left as a dependent clause, and “Likewise” introduces a comparison that is not clearly quantified. The reference in “They generated” is also less direct than naming India again. Grouping countries by a clear pattern—leaders, broadly similar production and consumption, and Germany’s exception—and using complete, clearly linked sentences would make the organisation more consistently effective.

Lexical Resource: Band 6.0

You use an adequate range of task-related vocabulary, including “generated,” “consumption,” “ranking,” and “approximately,” and the meaning is generally clear. There are attempts to vary wording rather than repeat “electricity” throughout. Some choices and collocations are imprecise, however: “highest ranking” is not a natural way to describe the largest figures, “used only” can sound evaluative, and “round about 5 and 6 billion” gives an unsuitable scale for the data. “As compare to” is also an inaccurate phrase choice. Use precise terms such as “highest output,” “consumed,” and “compared with,” and retain the chart’s units accurately when describing values. This would improve precision without requiring more elaborate vocabulary.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.5

You attempt a mix of simple and complex forms, including a contrast with “whereas” and a clause beginning “However.” Most of the intended comparisons can be understood, but some grammatical errors remain. In “China and United States were accounted,” the passive form is incorrect; write “China and the United States accounted for” or “were responsible for.” “While India did not use…” is a dependent clause without a main clause, and “the only country who” uses an unsuitable relative pronoun for a country. There are also agreement and article issues in “the production and consumption … was” and “China generated … electricity.” Review sentence completeness, subject–verb agreement, and articles, while continuing to use contrast clauses. More consistently accurate complex sentences would strengthen control.
