IELTS Writing Task 1 question

The bar chart below shows the top ten countries for the production and consumption of electricity in 2014.

Summarize the information by selecting and reporting the main features, and make comparisons where relevant.

Student answer (Band 6.0)

The bar chart depicts the data of the top ten countries that generated and used the maximum amount of electricity during 2014.

Overall, China and the United States have dominated the market by producing and utilizing the highest amount of electricity while the rest of the countries remained under 1100 billions KWH that included Korea Republic with the lowest amount of electricity.

China being one of the most developed and populated countries, consumed 5,322 billions KWH from the produced 5398 billions KWH energy to grow globally and came on first position in the electricity chart. The second was the United Stated, one of the world leaders that required a greater number of energy so it consumed 3,866 billions KWH out of 4,099 billions KWH electricity. The rest of the countries did not even utilized half of the energy that these two big countries have managed to use.

Korea Rep. was on tenth number since it produced 485.1 billions KWH which would not have been enough as 449.5 billions KWH usage was recorded. France, Brazil and Germany remained between 500 to 600 billions KWH power generation and consumption during the period. However, a sudden increase was seen in the production when Indian electricity levels were recorded since it produced 871 billions KWH and used 698.8 billions KWH of electricity becoming the 5th largest country that operates energy systems on a large scale. In addition, Japan saved almost 80 billions KWH of electricity as it produced 936.2 billions KWH that year being on number four in the chart. Moreover, Russia who plays a significant role in world politics and development, came on the third number that had 1057 billions KWH of energy but power consumption was 1038 billions KWH.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.0

You identify the main pattern: China and the United States lead by a wide margin, while the other countries produce less than about 1,100 billion kWh. You also include several relevant figures and comparisons, such as China’s production and consumption and India’s values. However, some key details are incomplete or imprecise. The overview says Korea had the lowest amount of electricity, but it is the lowest producer while Germany has the lowest consumption among the listed countries? In fact, Korea’s consumption is the lowest. More importantly, saying France, Brazil and Germany were all between 500 and 600 billion kWh for both measures overlooks that their consumption figures are below 500 for France and Brazil, while Germany consumes more than it produces. Focus the overview on the broad patterns and report these exceptions accurately.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.0

The response has a clear overall structure, with an introduction, an overview and two detail paragraphs. The information is generally understandable, and sequencing from the largest producers to smaller countries gives the report a basic progression. However, the final paragraph moves between Korea, France/Brazil/Germany, India, Japan and Russia, so the comparisons feel somewhat scattered rather than grouped by a clear principle. Some linking phrases, including “In addition” and “Moreover,” connect sentences mechanically without clarifying the relationship between the figures. Group countries by scale or by notable differences, and use references such as “By contrast” for Germany’s higher consumption. This would make the progression more controlled and reduce the impression of a list.

Lexical Resource: Band 6.0

You use an adequate range of vocabulary for describing the chart, including “produced,” “consumed,” “recorded” and “electricity levels.” Some attempts at more varied language are less suitable for a factual report: “dominated the market,” “grow globally,” and “plays a significant role in world politics” add interpretations that the chart does not show. There are also imprecise or awkward combinations such as “the rest ... did not even utilized half” and “came on the third number.” Use neutral, data-focused wording and standard collocations, for example, “ranked third” and “the remaining countries.” Check forms and units too: “billion kWh” is the appropriate unit phrasing, rather than “billions KWH.”

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 6.0

You attempt a mix of simple and complex sentences, and most of the meaning remains clear. Some grammatical errors occur in verb forms, agreement and sentence construction. For example, “did not even utilized” should be “did not even utilise,” while “Korea Rep. was on tenth number since it produced” would be more naturally structured as “Korea ranked tenth, producing…”. The sentence beginning “China being one of the most developed and populated countries” is a fragment-like opening, and “the second was the United Stated” has an unclear grammatical relationship between the country and its ranking. There are also inconsistent tense choices, such as “have dominated” alongside past-tense reporting of 2014 data. Use past tense consistently and build complete sentences with clear subjects and verbs.
