IELTS Writing Task 1 question
The bar chart below shows the top ten countries for the production and consumption of electricity in 2014.
Summarize the information by selecting and reporting the main features, and make comparisons where relevant.
Student answer (Band 6.0)
The chart illustrates ten countries which had the highest amount of energy produced and comsumed in the year of 2014.
Overall, China had the highest production and consumtion while Korea had the fewest. All of the nine countries had more production than consumtion while Germany were different.
China made the most amount of energy and used most of it with 5,398 and 5,322 billion killowatts. Coming after China was the America with almost 4100 of energy production and generated 3866 billions kilowatts. Under the America was the Russia with produced 1057 and consumed 1038 billions kilowatts of energy. Next was Japan with less than 950 of production and more than 850 billion kWh of consumption. Behind Japan was the India created 871 and used nearly 700 billions kilowatts of electricity.
Moreover, Canada produced approximately 620 while consumed almost 500 billions of kilowatts. France, Brazil and Germany were the three countries had under 570 billions of kilowatts while Germany had around 583 and France with Brazil had under 500 billions. Finally, Korea had slightly more than 485 of production and almost 450 billions kilowatts of consumption.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.0
You identify the main pattern accurately: China leads both measures, Korea is lowest, and Germany is the exception to the general pattern of production exceeding consumption. You also include relevant figures for most countries, and your overview gives the reader a useful summary. Some comparisons, however, are less fully or precisely reported. For example, the statement that France, Brazil and Germany were all below 570 in production is accurate, but the following comparison is unclear and does not explain that Germany’s consumption (582.5) exceeded its production, unlike the other countries. Also, “Korea had the fewest” is clearer as the lowest figures among the listed countries. More precise comparisons and a clearer explanation of Germany’s exception would strengthen the report.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.5
The response has a clear overall structure: an introduction, an overview, and paragraphs that move through the countries in a broadly logical order. Linking expressions such as “Overall,” “Coming after,” “Moreover,” and “Finally” help signal progression, and the reader can follow the comparisons. This meets the lower-band expectation of coherent organisation and shows some of the flexibility associated with stronger cohesion. However, the repeated sequencing phrases (“Under,” “Next,” “Behind”) make parts of the report feel mechanical, while the sentence beginning “France, Brazil and Germany were the three countries…” combines several comparisons in a confusing way. Grouping countries by similar figures and using clearer references between sentences would make the progression more fluent.
Lexical Resource: Band 5.5
You use enough topic vocabulary to describe the chart, including “production,” “consumption,” “approximately,” and “slightly more than.” The meaning is generally understandable, but the range and control are limited by repeated use of “energy,” “made,” “used,” and “billions of kilowatts.” Some choices are inaccurate or unnatural: “made the most amount of energy” and “the America” do not fit formal chart reporting, while “comsumed,” “consumtion,” and “killowatts” show spelling errors. Use the chart’s unit consistently as “billion kWh” rather than “billions kilowatts.” More precise reporting verbs and accurate spelling would make the vocabulary more appropriate and reduce awkward phrasing.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.5
You attempt both simple and more complex sentence forms, and the overall meaning is usually clear. Some grammatical errors remain, particularly with articles, agreement, and clause construction. For example, “the America” and “the Russia” use unnecessary articles, while “Germany were different” should use a singular verb. The phrase “the three countries had under 570” is missing a relative construction such as “that had,” and “Coming after China was the America” has an awkward inversion. There is also inconsistent control of plural forms in phrases such as “3866 billions.” These errors do not generally prevent understanding, but more reliable sentence patterns and careful checking of agreement and articles would improve accuracy.
