Student answer (Band 6.0)

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.0

You identify the main overall pattern accurately: China leads both measures, while the Republic of Korea is lowest, and you include several relevant figures for the leading countries. However, some comparisons are incomplete or imprecise. The statement that Japan, India and Canada fall within 600–1,000 kWh does not fit all their production and consumption figures, and grouping France, Brazil, Germany and Korea as producing and consuming below 600 overlooks Germany’s consumption of 582.5 only narrowly but is otherwise accurate; more importantly, Germany is the sole country where consumption exceeds production, a notable feature you miss. Develop the overview with this contrast and report the middle-ranking figures more precisely to make coverage more complete.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.5

The response has a clear overall arrangement: an introduction and overview are followed by comparisons of the leading countries and then the lower-ranked group. This gives the reader a coherent route through the information, and phrases such as “Overall” and “among them” help connect ideas. The progression is not fully effective, however, because the middle group is compressed into a broad range rather than compared clearly, and the final grouping does not highlight Germany’s unusual consumption figure. Some links between sentences are also abrupt. To strengthen progression, organise the data into clear high-, middle- and lower-value comparisons, and use linking phrases to show contrasts as well as rankings.

Lexical Resource: Band 6.0

You use an adequate range of task-related vocabulary, including “production,” “consumption,” “generates,” “utilization” and “fall in the range,” so the main comparisons are understandable. There are also attempts to vary wording rather than repeat “produce” throughout. Some choices are inaccurate or awkward for this chart, though: “maximum production,” “energy producing,” and “uses … of it” are less natural than standard descriptions of electricity output and use. “Over 5,398” is also an unclear way to present a figure that is given as 5,398. Spelling and capitalisation are inconsistent, as in “ustilization,” “Produces” and “kwh.” More precise collocations and consistent units would improve clarity and control.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 6.0

You use a mix of simple and more complex sentence forms, and most of the meaning remains clear. For example, the overview sentence uses a contrast between China and Korea, while the final sentence combines a group comparison with a specific figure. Some grammatical and punctuation errors remain. In “The second most energy producing and utilizing country is United States, producing … and consumes,” the article is missing before “United States,” and the participle structure does not match the finite verb that follows. There are also missing spaces after full stops, such as “energy. The,” and inconsistent capitalisation at sentence openings. Aim for parallel structures when comparing production and consumption, and check articles, verb forms and punctuation during revision.
