IELTS Writing Task 1 question
The bar chart below shows the top ten countries for the production and consumption of electricity in 2014.
Summarize the information by selecting and reporting the main features, and make comparisons where relevant.
Student answer (Band 6.0)
The horizontal bar chart illustrates the information about the production and consumption of electricity in the top ten nations in the year 2014. The data is given in billion kWh.
Overall, it is readily apparent that china was the largest country to produce and use the electricity, whereas Korea, Rep. was the least among the other countries.
To begin, the production and consumption of electricity in china was highest with 5,398 billion kWh and 5,322 billion kWh respectively. USA ranked the second with production of 4,099 billion and consumption of 3,866 billion kWh. Russia and Japan were almost in same numbers followed by India with production ( 871 billion kWh) and consumption (698.8 billion kWh).
Moving forward, canada was less than india with 618.9 and 499.9 respectively. looking towards the numbers of France, brazil and germany , they showed almost the same proportions. Finally, the least one was Korea,Rep. with production of 485.1 billion kWh and consumtion of energy was 449.9 billion kWh.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.0
You identify the main overall pattern: China leads both production and consumption, while Korea is at the bottom, and you support this with accurate figures for the two largest countries. Several other comparisons are also relevant. However, some features are less fully reported: Russia and Japan are described only as having “almost” the same numbers, without figures, and the grouping of France, Brazil and Germany as having “almost the same proportions” is imprecise. Germany is a notable exception because its consumption (582.5) exceeds its production (526.6), unlike most countries; this key contrast is missed. Also, Korea’s consumption is given as 449.9 rather than 449.5. More precise comparisons and a fuller overview of the exceptions would strengthen the summary.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.5
The response has a clear overall structure: an introduction, an overview, and two paragraphs moving from the highest figures towards the lower-ranked countries. Sequencing phrases such as “To begin,” “Moving forward,” and “Finally” help the reader follow this progression, and the main comparisons are generally easy to locate. To make the organisation more effective, group figures by meaningful patterns rather than relying mainly on rank order, and use clearer links between comparisons. For example, the sentence about Russia and Japan is followed by India without explaining how their figures compare. The final paragraph also groups France, Brazil and Germany together despite Germany’s different consumption pattern. More precise referencing and transitions would make cohesion less mechanical.
Lexical Resource: Band 6.0
You use an adequate range of task-related vocabulary, including “production,” “consumption,” “ranked,” “respectively,” and “proportions,” so the chart is generally described clearly. Some choices, however, are imprecise or unnatural: “the largest country to produce and use the electricity” refers to the country rather than its output, and “the least one” is an awkward way to describe the lowest figures. “Almost in same numbers” and “almost the same proportions” also do not express the comparisons precisely. There are spelling and capitalisation slips, including “consumtion,” “china,” and lower-case country names. Aim for accurate collocations such as “highest electricity producer” and “similar output levels,” and check spelling and proper nouns carefully.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 6.0
You use a mix of simple and more developed sentence forms, and most of the meaning remains clear. The opening and overview are complete sentences, while the figures are often incorporated into longer comparisons. Some grammatical errors remain, including missing articles or prepositions in “ranked the second” and “almost in same numbers,” and inconsistent sentence punctuation and capitalisation at the start of “looking towards.” The phrase “with production of 4,099 billion and consumption of 3,866 billion kWh” also omits the unit after the first figure, making the parallel structure less clear. Work on articles, prepositions, and balanced constructions when presenting paired data; these refinements would improve accuracy without sacrificing the range you already attempt.
