IELTS Writing Task 1 question

The bar chart below shows the top ten countries for the production and consumption of electricity in 2014.

Summarize the information by selecting and reporting the main features, and make comparisons where relevant.

Student answer (Band 6.5)

The bar chart provides data on the power produced and consumed by top ten listed countries in 2014.

Overall, China had the highest participation in both generating and utilizing the electricity, while Korea, republic was the lowest in all countries. Most countries generate more instead of leveraging, with the exception of Germany, whose consumption was more.

In terms of China, ranked first for producing power about 5,398 billion kWh and consuming 5,322 billion kWh, followed by United States around 4,099 billion kWh and 3,866 billion kWh, respectively. Whereas, Russia utilized 1038 billion kWh, almost the same amount that was produced(1,057 billion kWh).

Meanwhile, The same trend was observed in all these countries of generating more and utilising less. Japan and India were ranked fourth and fifth position for generating around 936.3 billion kWh and 871 billion kWh. The remaining five nations - Canada, France, Brazil, Germany and Korea, republic had the production level ranging from 485.1 billion kWh to 618.9 billion kWh. Among them, German was the only country whose energy consumption exceeded(582.5 billion kWh).

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 7.0

The response addresses the chart and gives a clear overview: China leads both measures, Korea is lowest, and Germany is the exception to the general pattern of production exceeding consumption. These are the main features, and the China and US figures are accurately reported. Russia is also compared appropriately. The account is less complete for the lower-ranked countries: it groups five nations into a production range but does not report their consumption figures or make useful comparisons among them. In particular, Germany’s consumption is identified as higher, but the comparison with its production is not quantified. To strengthen the response, select a few representative figures from this group and explain the scale of the differences rather than relying on a broad range.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.5

The four-paragraph structure is appropriate, moving from an introduction and overview to details about the leading countries and then the rest. The information is generally easy to follow, and phrases such as “Overall,” “In terms of China,” and “Meanwhile” signal shifts between points. However, some linking is mechanical or awkward: “Whereas” begins a sentence fragment-like transition, and “The same trend was observed in all these countries” is imprecise after the preceding discussion. The final paragraph also combines several countries without clearly separating their comparisons. This meets the lower-band expectation of an overall coherent arrangement, while the occasional unclear reference and uneven progression limit stronger cohesion. Use more precise links and group figures by meaningful comparisons.

Lexical Resource: Band 6.0

There is adequate vocabulary for describing the chart, including “producing,” “consuming,” “ranked,” “exception,” and “exceeded.” The writer also attempts some variation through “generating” and “utilizing.” However, several choices are inaccurate or unnatural for this context: “highest participation” does not describe electricity output, “leveraging” is not an appropriate synonym for consuming, and “power” and “electricity” are used somewhat loosely. “Korea, republic” and “German” also show problems with country-name forms. These choices do not prevent understanding, but they reduce precision and naturalness. Aim for standard chart language such as “production,” “consumption,” “recorded,” and “the Republic of Korea,” and avoid substituting less suitable synonyms merely to vary wording.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 6.0

The response uses a mix of simple statements and more complex structures, including the overview sentence with “while” and the clause beginning “whose consumption was more.” Most meanings remain clear, but some grammatical errors persist. For example, “Most countries generate more” shifts into the present tense when describing 2014 data, and “Japan and India were ranked fourth and fifth position” has an incorrect construction. The sentence beginning “Whereas” is not well integrated with the preceding sentence, while “The remaining five nations … had the production level” has awkward number and article use. Punctuation is also inconsistent around parenthetical figures. Check tense consistency, use “ranked fourth and fifth,” and proofread sentence boundaries and articles.
