Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 4.0

You identify the chart’s subject and report several relevant figures, including the leading totals for China and the United States. However, the response only minimally summarises the main features: it lacks a clear, accurate overview of the overall pattern, and the final claim that most countries “was fall down” is not supported by a chart showing production and consumption rather than change over time. Several figures are also misreported: Japan’s consumption is 856.7, not 936.2, and Brazil’s production and consumption are reversed. Germany is another exception, as consumption exceeds production. The response is 142 words, below the required 150. To improve, select the key comparisons, give an accurate overview, and check each figure against the chart.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 5.0

The response has a basic structure: an introduction, two sections introduced by “On the one hand” and “On the other hand,” and a concluding overview. This gives the reader some sense of organisation, and grouping the countries helps present the data. However, the progression is mostly a list of figures rather than a comparison, while the linking phrases do not express a meaningful contrast between the groups. The final sentence also introduces an unclear idea about countries falling, which does not follow from the data. Use paragraphs to separate the overview from selected details, and connect comparisons directly—for example, note that production exceeds consumption in most listed countries, with Germany as the exception.

Lexical Resource: Band 4.5

You use some relevant task vocabulary, including “production,” “consumption,” “bar chart,” and “overall,” so the topic is generally recognisable. However, the range is basic and repetitive, and spelling errors such as “comsumption,” “countaries,” “prodution,” and “consuption” are frequent enough to weaken clarity. Some expressions are also unsuitable for describing this chart: “rank countries” and “fall down” do not accurately convey the information. Aim for precise reporting language and check spelling carefully. For example, use “the ten countries ranked highest” rather than “rank countries,” and describe the figures as “higher” or “lower” rather than saying countries “fall down.”

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 4.5

Most sentences use simple subject–verb patterns, and the reader can understand many of the country-by-country statements. However, grammatical control is inconsistent, with errors in agreement, tense, articles, and sentence boundaries. Examples include “their are rank countaries,” “the bar graph show,” and “countries … was fall down”; the last also uses an unsuitable verb form for a chart describing one year. Capitalisation and punctuation are unreliable, as in “in china” and the run-on transition “electricity.China.” The response shows little variety beyond short statements. Practise accurate present-tense reporting structures, such as “China produced … and consumed …,” and use complete, correctly punctuated sentences.
