IELTS Writing Task 1 question

The bar chart below shows the top ten countries for the production and consumption of electricity in 2014.

Summarize the information by selecting and reporting the main features, and make comparisons where relevant.

Student answer (Band 6.0)

The bar chart describes the rankings of countries based on the amount of electricy they produced and consumed in 2014.

Overall, China and United States had significantly higher electrical consumption and production comparing to the other countires. For each country, the magnitude of electrical production was higher than the consumption except Germany.

In the amount of elecricity utilized and produced, China and United States were leading, however China was over by 1000 in both of them respectively by producing 5398 billion kWh and utilizing 5322 kWh. For the countires placed between 3 and 10, their electricity usage and consumption was relatively close to each other, ranging between lower bound of 449.5 kWh and upper bound of 1057 kWh, meaning their difference changed steadily by hundreds not by thousands. In addition, only Germany had the amount of elecrical consumption of 582.5 billion kWh which is higher than its production of 526.6 billion kWh.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.5

The response identifies the main pattern accurately: China and the United States dominate both measures, and Germany is the only country where consumption exceeds production. It also includes relevant figures for China and Germany. This gives a clear overview and covers the key comparison, with the main features generally selected appropriately. However, some details are imprecise or under-developed: China’s lead is described as “over by 1000,” although its production and consumption are each only about 76 billion kWh above the US figures. The range for countries ranked 3–10 also mixes production and consumption values without clearly explaining the comparisons. To strengthen the report, compare the two leading countries accurately and select a few representative figures from the middle group.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.0

The response has a coherent overall arrangement: an introduction, an overview, and a paragraph giving supporting details. The overview helps the reader understand the main pattern before the figures are discussed. Linking expressions such as “Overall,” “however,” and “In addition” make relationships between ideas visible. At times, though, the progression within the final paragraph is less clear. The sentence beginning “For the countries placed between 3 and 10” combines a broad range, a claim about differences, and then a separate Germany exception, so the comparison is difficult to follow. Some references, such as “both of them,” are also not fully precise. Group the middle-ranked countries separately and use clearer links between each comparison.

Lexical Resource: Band 5.5

The response uses relevant vocabulary for describing the chart, including “rankings,” “production,” “consumption,” “magnitude,” and “ranging between.” This is enough to communicate the main comparisons, but word choice and collocation are not consistently natural. For example, “electrical consumption” and “electricity utilized and produced” are less idiomatic than “electricity consumption” and “electricity generated and consumed.” “China was over by 1000” is unclear, and “their difference changed steadily by hundreds” does not express the comparison precisely. There are also spelling errors, including “electricy,” “countires,” and “elecricity.” Use standard chart-reporting phrases and check spelling carefully; more precise vocabulary would make the comparisons easier to understand.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.5

You use a mix of simple and more complex sentence forms, including the overview sentence with “except Germany” and the longer sentence beginning “For the countries placed between 3 and 10.” Most of the intended meaning remains understandable, but some grammatical choices reduce clarity. In “China and United States,” the article is missing before “United States,” and “comparing to” is not correctly formed in this construction. The phrase “by producing 5398 … and utilizing 5322” also has an unclear grammatical relationship to the preceding clause. In addition, “their difference changed steadily” does not clearly identify what “their” refers to. Aim for more controlled sentence structures, accurate articles and comparisons, and clear references when presenting figures.
