Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 3.5

The response identifies the countries and reports many figures accurately, including the leading values for China and the United States. However, it mainly lists data rather than summarising the chart’s key features: there is no clear overview of the large gap between the top two countries and the rest, or of the general pattern that production exceeds consumption. There is also a significant data reversal for Canada: production is 618.9 billion kWh and consumption is 499.9, not the other way around. The comparison about Germany and Korea is relevant, but the response is below the required 150 words (145 words; eight copied prompt words are excluded). Add a concise overview and prioritise the main comparisons.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 4.5

The response follows the chart’s country ranking, so the reader can generally track which figures belong to each country. Repeated openings such as “In China,” “In USA,” and “In Russia” provide basic sequencing, and the final comparisons attempt to connect the data. However, the writing is essentially one continuous list, with no paragraphing to distinguish an overview from supporting details. Repeated sentence patterns make the progression mechanical, while “it consumption and production” and “It production” leave the references unclear. Grouping the leading countries separately from the lower figures, and using clear links such as “By contrast” or “Overall,” would make the organisation easier to follow.

Lexical Resource: Band 4.5

The vocabulary is sufficient to identify the topic and report the figures: terms such as “production,” “consumption,” and “lower” are relevant and generally understandable. However, the range is narrow and repetitive, especially through the repeated phrase “production of electricity” and the repeated country-by-country formula. Some word choices and forms are inaccurate or awkward, including “the top ten countries” in the opening and “It production.” The comparison “lower then Canada” also uses an incorrect form for the intended comparison. Use concise chart language such as “generated,” “used,” “ranked,” and “compared with,” while keeping the meaning precise. Greater variety in reporting comparisons would improve clarity and fluency.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 4.5

Most sentences use a basic subject–verb pattern, and the numerical information is usually presented in a form the reader can understand. However, grammatical control is inconsistent, and the response shows little variety in sentence structures. The opening has subject–verb disagreement in “The chart illustrate,” and the phrase “in 2014 to the top ten countries” does not form a clear grammatical relationship. Several clauses omit necessary verbs or articles, as in “In Russia, production of electricity 1,057,” while “it consumption” and “It production” have unclear pronoun structures. There is also a sentence-initial lowercase “it.” Practise complete sentences with accurate agreement and articles, and combine related figures using controlled comparative structures.
