Summarize the information by selecting and reporting the main features, and make comparisons where relevant.

Student answer (Band 6.0)

The bar chart illustrates the ranking of the top 10 countries between production and consumption of electricity in 2014

Overall, China was the leading consumer and producer of electricity in 2014. Whereas Korea Republic had the lowest figures in both consumption and electricity.

In terms of production, China was ranked the top country to produce electricity, at 5,398 billion kWh, followed by the United states with 4,099 billion kWh. While all the other countries were less than 1,000 billion kWh, making them in middle of the rankings. The country which produces the least amount of electricy was Korea with 485.1 billion kWh.

Regarding consumption, China was still recognized as the leading country with 5,322 billion kWh. Then, United Stated followed by 3,866 billion kWh, making them the two countries who are the largest producers and consumptions of electricity among the other countries. Similarly with production, other countries were also using electricity below 1, 000 billion kWh. However, Korea still ranked the lowest, at 449.5 billion kWh.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.0

You identify the chart’s main pattern accurately: China and the United States are far ahead of the other countries, and Korea has the lowest production and consumption figures. The key figures you give for these countries are correct, and you make relevant comparisons between the two measures. However, the overview is limited, and some details are unclear or inaccurate: saying all the other countries produced less than 1,000 billion kWh overlooks Russia’s 1,057, while describing the remaining countries as “in middle of the rankings” does not explain their relative positions. You also miss the notable exception of Germany, where consumption exceeds production. Include this contrast and report the mid-ranking figures more precisely to develop the summary more fully.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.5

The response has a clear overall arrangement: an introduction, an overview, and separate paragraphs for production and consumption. This makes the information easy to follow, and transitions such as “In terms of production” and “Regarding consumption” help signal the shift in focus. Some linking is mechanical or awkward, however. “Similarly with production” repeats the comparison without adding much, and “Then, United Stated followed by” makes the relationship between the figures difficult to parse. The overview also repeats points that are restated in the detail paragraphs. To strengthen progression, group the leading countries and the lower figures more deliberately, and use concise links that clarify comparisons rather than simply announce a new section.

Lexical Resource: Band 6.0

You use an adequate range of task-related vocabulary, including “leading,” “ranked,” “figures,” and “consumption,” so the main information is generally clear. There are also attempts to vary expression, such as “recognized as the leading country.” However, some word choices and collocations are inaccurate or unnatural: “the top country to produce electricity,” “in middle of the rankings,” and “the largest producers and consumptions” do not express the intended comparisons precisely. “Electricity” is also omitted from the overview’s phrase “lowest figures in both consumption and electricity,” and “electricy” is misspelled. Aim for consistent, precise terms such as “highest producer,” “mid-ranking countries,” and “production and consumption figures,” and check spelling and word forms.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 6.0

You use a mix of simple sentences and more complex forms, including the contrast introduced by “Whereas” and the clause beginning “While all the other countries…”. Most of the meaning remains understandable, but some sentence structures are incomplete or awkward. “Whereas Korea Republic had the lowest figures…” is not smoothly connected to the preceding sentence, and “While all the other countries were less than 1,000…” is a dependent clause presented as a sentence. There are also errors in forms and agreement, as in “United Stated followed by” and “the two countries who are the largest producers and consumptions.” Use complete clauses, maintain consistent past-tense reporting, and check articles and plural forms. These revisions would improve accuracy while preserving your range of sentence structures.
