IELTS Writing Task 1 question
The bar chart below shows the top ten countries for the production and consumption of electricity in 2014.
Summarize the information by selecting and reporting the main features, and make comparisons where relevant.
Student answer (Band 5.5)
The given bar chart gives the information about the top ten countries for the manufacturing and depletion of electricity in 2014.
Overall, the China had the largest electricity production and consumption area, while United States saw second largest country for manufacturing and expenditure point of view. Meanwhile, others almost all countries had smallest electricity production and consumption area.
In 2014, China was the largest electricity production country accounted for 5398 billion kWh and consuming 5322 billion kwh. Followed by the United States was manufactured 4099 billion kWh of electricity in the same year. However, Russia and Japan produced electricity 1057 billion kwh and 936.2 billion kWh, respectively, and their expenditure had 3866 billion kWh in the same order. Meanwhile, India and Canada were made up 871 billion kwh and 618.9 billion kwh in the same sequence and their usage 698.8 billion kwh and 499.9 respectively.
On the other hand, France and Brazil making up 561.2 billion kwh and 530.7 billion kwh and used 462.9 billion kwh and 455.8 billion kwh eletricity respectively. Also Germany renresented 526.6 billion kwh but their expenditure more than production to about 582.5 billion kwh. Finally, Korea, Rep was produced 485.1 billion kwh and their usage 449.5 billion kwh.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 5.5
You identify the main leaders accurately: China ranks first in both measures, followed by the United States, and you include figures for all ten countries. The comparison that Germany consumed more than it produced is also a useful feature. However, the overview is imprecise: “others almost all countries had smallest” does not clearly summarise the large gap between the top two countries and the rest. More importantly, the sentence about Russia and Japan gives the US consumption figure, 3,866, as if it belonged to them; their consumption values are 1,038 and 856.7. The response therefore covers the chart but includes a significant data misattribution and limited synthesis of the main patterns.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 5.5
The response has a recognisable structure, with an introduction, an overview and two paragraphs grouping countries, and the sequence from the largest producers to the smaller ones is generally understandable. Linking expressions such as “Meanwhile,” “On the other hand,” and “Finally” help signal movement through the data. However, some connections are inaccurate or mechanical: “Followed by the United States” does not form a complete sentence, and “in the same order” makes the misplaced consumption figure harder to interpret. The overview’s “Meanwhile” also introduces no clear contrast. Grouping countries by rank is a workable approach, but clearer topic sentences and more precise references to which country each figure describes would improve progression.
Lexical Resource: Band 5.0
You use some relevant task vocabulary, including “production,” “consumption,” “usage,” and “respectively,” and the reader can usually identify the intended measures. However, word choice and collocation are often inaccurate, which limits precision. “Manufacturing” and “depletion” are not suitable substitutes for electricity production and consumption, while “expenditure point of view” does not describe electricity use. Phrases such as “production area,” “largest electricity production country,” and “were made up” are also unnatural in this context. There are noticeable spelling errors, including “eletricity” and “renresented.” Aim for a smaller set of accurate chart terms—such as “generated,” “consumed,” and “output”—rather than using less suitable synonyms.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.0
You attempt both simple and more extended sentences, and the use of past-tense reporting is appropriate for data from 2014. However, errors occur frequently in sentence construction and verb forms, sometimes making relationships between figures unclear. For example, “Followed by the United States was manufactured” is not a complete, correctly formed clause, and “France and Brazil making up … and used” shifts between incompatible verb forms. There are also problems with articles and agreement, as in “the China” and “their expenditure” when referring to Germany. Some sentences are understandable, but the repeated errors and limited control of complex structures fit this performance. Practise complete subject–verb clauses and keep parallel forms when comparing production with consumption.
