Student answer (Band 5.5)
The bar chart illustrates the ten leading countries in terms of electricity production and consumption in 2014.
Overall, two countries showed the highest production and consumption of electricity while, others had less figures in comparison of these two countries. Germany was only country with more consumption than production of electricity.
In this chart, China was top of the list with the production of 5,398 kWh electricty and consumed 5,322 billion KWh while, on the second number was United States with 4,099 billion kWh production and 3,866 billion consumotion little bit less than production. On third and forth number was Russia and Japan with 1,057 kWh and 936.0 kWh production rate and 1,038 kWh 856.7 kWh consumption figures.
Further more, was india and Canada. India produced 871 kWh electricity and consumed 698.8 kWh whereas, Canada produced 618.9 and consumed 499.9 kWh electeicity. Next was France and Brazil, they produced 561.2 kWh and 530.7 kWh and consumed 462.9 kWh and 455.8 kWh electricity. Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 5.5
You identify the main pattern that China and the United States lead both measures, and you note Germany as the exception where consumption exceeds production. Most figures are reported accurately, including the leading countries and the lower-ranked group. However, the overview is vague: “two countries showed the highest” does not explain the large gap between these leaders and the remaining countries. There is also a significant factual error in the final sentence: Germany’s consumption is 582.5 billion kWh, not 526.6; 526.6 is its production. The response mainly lists figures, with limited comparison or interpretation. To strengthen it, give a sharper overview and compare the scale of the top two with the rest, while checking the Germany data.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 5.5
The response has a recognisable structure: an introduction, an overview, and paragraphs that group countries by rank. This helps the reader follow the data, and expressions such as “whereas” and “Next” signal some relationships. However, progression is often mechanical, with repeated sequencing phrases such as “On third and forth number,” “Further more,” and “At last.” The grouping also becomes unclear when Germany is added as a separate final sentence after Korea, despite being ranked ninth. Some sentence connections are awkward, particularly “Further more, was india and Canada.” Organise the figures into clearer groups, such as the two leaders, the middle-ranking countries, and the lower group, and use linking language to show comparisons rather than simply list items.
Lexical Resource: Band 5.0
You use relevant task vocabulary, including “production,” “consumption,” “produced,” and “consumed,” so the basic meaning is generally clear. However, the range is limited and several phrases are unnatural or imprecise, such as “top of the list,” “on the second number,” and “less figures in comparison of these two countries.” Repetition of “electricity” and “production” also makes the report sound list-like. Spelling errors—including “electricty,” “consumotion,” “electeicity,” and “electrivity”—are noticeable, and the unit is inconsistently written as “kWh” without “billion” in several places. Build a more precise set of comparison phrases and check spelling and unit labels carefully.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.0
You attempt some longer sentences and use contrast clauses, for example, “India produced … whereas, Canada produced …,” showing an effort to connect information. However, sentence structures are often faulty, and errors recur in articles, word order, agreement, and punctuation. Examples include “Germany was only country” (missing an article), “On third and forth number was Russia and Japan” (incorrect construction and agreement), and “Further more, was india and Canada” (incomplete sentence). Commas are also misplaced before “while” and “whereas.” Most statements rely on the same simple reporting pattern, so the range remains limited. Practise accurate comparative sentence frames, such as “China produced slightly more electricity than it consumed,” and proofread each sentence for a complete subject and verb.
