IELTS Writing Task 1 question
The bar chart below shows the top ten countries for the production and consumption of electricity in 2014.
Summarize the information by selecting and reporting the main features, and make comparisons where relevant.
Student answer (Band 6.0)
The bar chart below illustrates the production and consumption of electricity in the top ten countries in one year.
Overall, production in all countries exceeds consumption. China and the United States are the largest electricity producers, while the Republic of Korea has the lowest production and consumption in 2014.
China and the United States had the highest production and consumption of electricity have a difference of approximately 1,000 billion kWh. Russia and Japan, as well as India, have only a difference of 100 billion kWh for electricity. Moreover, Canada and France have significantly same figure in the production and consumption rates of electricity have a small difference of 95 billion kWh.
In addition, Brazil and the Republic of Korea have nearly identical figures for electricity production and consumption, with only a variation of 90 billion kWh. In contrast, Germany is the only one whose production value is lower than its consumption, with a small difference of 40 billion kWh.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.0
You provide a relevant overview by identifying China and the United States as the leading producers and noting Germany as the exception to the general production-consumption pattern. You also compare several groups of countries, so the main features are addressed. However, the overview is partly inaccurate: Korea has the lowest production, but Germany—not Korea—has the lowest consumption. Some comparisons are also unclear or imprecise. For example, the gap between China’s production and consumption is about 76 billion kWh, not approximately 1,000; the United States’ gap is about 233 billion. The statement that Russia, Japan and India each differ by about 100 billion also overlooks their varying gaps. Select a few accurate comparisons and report the figures precisely.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.0
The response has a clear overall arrangement: an introduction, an overview, and two paragraphs grouping country comparisons. Linking expressions such as “Overall,” “Moreover,” “In addition,” and “In contrast” help signal the direction of the discussion. This gives the report a coherent basic progression. However, some connections are mechanical, and the long second paragraph combines several comparisons without clearly separating them. The sentence beginning “China and the United States had the highest…” is difficult to follow because it joins the ranking and the size of the difference in an unclear way. Organise the details around meaningful groups, and use clearer references to show which figures or countries each comparison concerns.
Lexical Resource: Band 6.0
You use an adequate range of task-related vocabulary, including “production,” “consumption,” “highest,” “lowest,” “identical,” and “variation.” These terms make the topic clear, and you attempt to describe differences rather than simply list countries. Some word choices and collocations are inaccurate or unnatural, however. “Have a difference” is repeated where “the gap was” would be more idiomatic, while “significantly same figure” is contradictory and unclear. “Variation” is also less precise than “difference” for comparing the two measures. Aim for concise, accurate language and avoid repeating the same comparison phrase. More precise terms such as “exceeded,” “gap,” and “respectively” would help you describe the data more naturally.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.5
You attempt both simple and more complex sentence forms, including clauses introduced by “while” and “with,” and the overall meaning is generally understandable. Some grammatical errors remain, particularly in sentence construction and verb patterns. For example, “China and the United States had the highest production and consumption of electricity have a difference” contains two competing verb structures; it could be recast as “China and the United States had the highest figures, with a gap of…”. The sentence about Canada and France also repeats “have” and lacks a clear structure. In addition, the opening says “in one year,” while the overview later specifies 2014. Use consistent tense and check that each sentence has one clear main clause before adding comparisons.
