The bar chart below shows the top ten countries for the production and consumption of electricity in 2014.
Summarize the information by selecting and reporting the main features, and make comparisons where relevant.
Student answer (Band 6.0)
The given bar chart shows comparison of production and consumption of electricity by the top ten countries in the year 2014.
Overall, China is ranked as the highest in terms of production and utilization of electricity. Whereas, Korean Republic is ranked as the lowest producer as well as the lowest consumer of electricity.
China produces 5398 billion kWh and uses as about 5322 billion kWh. Followed by United States which produces 4099 billion kWh and consumes 3866 billion kWh. While Russia produces 1057 billion kWh and consumes 1038 billion kWh. Japan and India produces 936.2 and 871 billion kWh and consumes 856.7 and 698.8 billion kWh respectively. Meanwhile, Canada, France, Brazil, and Korean Republic generates 618.9, 561.2, 530.7 and 449.5 billion kWh respectively and utilizes 499.9, 462.9. 455.8 and 582.9 billion kWh respectively.
On the other hand, Germany accounts for the production of electricity of around 526.6 billion kWh. However, Germany utilizes more electricity than it generates at around 582.5 billion kWh of consumption. So, it's utilization is surplus when compared to all other nations who generate surplus electricity.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.0
You identify the main pattern accurately: China leads both measures, while Korea is among the lowest, and you highlight Germany as the exception where consumption exceeds production. Most figures are reported correctly, including the major values for China, the United States, Russia, Japan and India. However, the final figures for Korea are inaccurate: its production is 485.1, not 449.5, and consumption is 449.5, not 582.9. The overview could also be more precise: Korea has the lowest production, but Germany—not Korea—has the lowest consumption. Your comparison that all other nations generate a surplus is relevant, but the overview and data selection need more careful checking and clearer emphasis on the overall scale differences.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.0
The response has a clear overall structure, moving from an introduction and overview to country figures and then the Germany exception. This makes the information generally easy to follow. You also use linking expressions such as “Followed by,” “Meanwhile” and “On the other hand.” At times, however, these links feel mechanical or do not connect complete ideas smoothly: “Followed by United States…” and “While Russia…” are fragments rather than fully integrated sentences. The long sentence listing four countries and two sets of figures is also difficult to process, especially where the values are separated by a full stop. Grouping countries into clearer comparisons and using fewer, more purposeful transitions would improve progression and cohesion.
Lexical Resource: Band 6.0
You use an adequate range of task-related vocabulary, including “production,” “consumption,” “ranked,” “generates” and “surplus,” so the chart’s subject is communicated clearly. There are also attempts to avoid repetition through alternatives such as “uses” and “utilizes.” Some choices are inaccurate or unnatural, however: “utilization” is less suitable than “consumption” in this context, and “Korean Republic” is not the standard country name used in the chart (“South Korea” or “the Republic of Korea”). “Produces” and “generates” are repeated, while “accounts for the production of electricity of” is wordy and awkward. More precise chart language and natural collocations would make the comparisons clearer and more fluent.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.5
You attempt both simple and more complex sentence forms, including the contrast in “However, Germany utilizes more electricity than it generates…” and the overview beginning “Whereas…”. Meaning is generally understandable, but some grammatical errors remain. “China produces… and uses as about…” has an incorrect construction, and “Japan and India produces” should use a plural verb. Several clauses beginning “Followed by” and “While Russia…” are incomplete sentences, and “it's utilization” uses an incorrect apostrophe form for the possessive. The long list sentence also has punctuation problems, including a full stop between figures that should be joined consistently. Check sentence completeness, subject–verb agreement and possessives, while retaining your attempts at varied structures.
