IELTS Writing Task 1 question

The bar chart below shows the top ten countries for the production and consumption of electricity in 2014.

Summarize the information by selecting and reporting the main features, and make comparisons where relevant.

Student answer (Band 5.5)

The bar graph illustrates the number of countries who are in the ranking of top ten for producing and consuming electric supply during the year 2014.

Overall, China experienced a significant surge in the production and consumption of electricity. On the other hand, Korea consumes and produces electricity thousand times less than United States. The number of consumption and production rate is plateaued among Canada, France, and Brazil.

China produces 5,398 billion kilo wat per hour electric supply in every area of the country. It is slight more than United States production rate which is 4,099 billion. The consumption of electricity in China is 5,322. While in United States the consumption is at 3,866 billion kilo wat per hour. The figure from India to Germany remain unchanged. Whereas, electricity produced and consumed in Korea is about 485.1 and 499.5 billion kilo wat per hour. Russia shows 1,057 and 1,038 billion production and consumption rate respectively. Ultimately, the consuming and producing strategies followed by Japan were quite less than Russia.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 5.0

You identify the two leading countries and include several relevant figures, such as China’s production and consumption and Russia’s totals. However, the response only partially selects and reports the chart’s main features. The overview claims China had a “significant surge,” although the chart gives a single year and shows no change over time; the comparison that Korea’s figures are “thousand times less” than the United States’ is also inaccurate. The statement that figures from India to Germany “remain unchanged” is unclear and does not reflect the differences shown, including Germany’s consumption exceeding its production. Develop a more accurate overview of the broad ranking and the general production-consumption pattern, then support it with precise comparisons.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 5.5

The response has a recognisable structure: an introduction, an overview, and a paragraph of figures. Linking expressions such as “Overall,” “On the other hand,” and “Whereas” show an attempt to guide the reader. However, progression is uneven because the overview introduces claims that are not clearly supported, and the detail paragraph moves between China, the United States, India, Germany, Korea, Russia, and Japan without a consistent comparison pattern. “The figure from India to Germany remain unchanged” also interrupts the flow because its reference is unclear. Grouping the two leading countries first, then the middle-ranking countries, and finally the remaining comparisons would make the information easier to follow.

Lexical Resource: Band 5.5

You use some task-related vocabulary, including “production,” “consumption,” “ranking,” and “significant,” and the reader can generally identify the subject of the report. However, several choices are inaccurate or unnatural for describing a chart. “Surge” suggests change over time, while “electric supply” and “consuming and producing strategies” do not describe the data precisely. The repeated phrase “billion kilo wat per hour” is also not the chart’s unit; use “billion kWh” or “billion kilowatt-hours.” Spelling and word-form issues such as “kilo wat” and “plateaued” further reduce precision. Aim for concise chart language such as “generated,” “used,” “stood at,” and “was higher than.”

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.5

You attempt a mixture of simple and more complex sentences, including a contrast introduced by “Whereas” and a sentence beginning “While in United States.” Meaning is usually recoverable, but errors in sentence construction and agreement occur often enough to affect clarity. For example, “the number of consumption and production rate is plateaued” has an awkward subject and verb pattern, while “The figure from India to Germany remain unchanged” has a singular/plural agreement problem and an unclear construction. Articles are also missing in “in United States,” and “Korea consumes and produces” shifts to the present tense despite the chart describing 2014. Practise accurate past-tense reporting and build comparisons with complete, parallel clauses.
