IELTS Writing Task 1 question

The bar chart below shows the top ten countries for the production and consumption of electricity in 2014.

Summarize the information by selecting and reporting the main features, and make comparisons where relevant.

Student answer (Band 6.0)

The bar chart demonstrates the production and consumption of electricity in 2014 for the top ten countries.

Overall, China dominated the chart with prominent figures for both production and consumption of electricity, with United States falling behind it. However, Korea Republic remained the lowest among other countries for producing and consuming power. Other countries' figures stayed almost the same.

In 2014. China topped the chart by producing 5,398 billion kWh of electricity and consuming nearly around 5,322 billion kWh. United States production and consumption were 4,099 and 3,866 billion kWh, respectively. Russia remained the third dominating country with the values just above 1,000 billion kWh for both categories.

Korea Republic was the least producer and consumer of electricity, with 485.1 and 449.5 billion kWh, respectively. Japan and India produced 936.2 and 871 billion kWh, repectively, and consumed 856.7 and 698.8 billion kWh of electricity, repectively. Other countries, including Canada, France, Brazil, and Germany, produced figures ranging between 520 and 620 billion kWh and consumed between 450 and 583 billion kWh.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.5

The response identifies the main pattern accurately: China leads production and consumption, the United States is second, and Korea is lowest in both. It also reports several figures correctly, including the leading countries and Japan and India, and gives a useful overview. This meets the task well, with some features more fully reported than others. The comparison that “Other countries’ figures stayed almost the same” is too broad: Germany is the exception, consuming 582.5 billion kWh compared with production of 526.6, while most other countries produce more than they consume. The final range for Canada, France, Brazil and Germany is broadly accurate but would be stronger with a clearer comparison of this exception and the general production-consumption pattern.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.0

The response has a clear overall arrangement: an introduction, an overview, and two paragraphs presenting the leading and lower-ranking countries. Information generally progresses from the largest producers to the smaller figures, and linking expressions such as “Overall,” “However,” and “respectively” help guide the reader. Cohesion is not always smooth, though. “Other countries’ figures stayed almost the same” is vague and does not clearly connect to the later figures, while the final paragraph groups several countries without explaining their relationship. The sentence fragment-like opening “In 2014.” also interrupts the flow. Use more precise transitions and organise comparisons into clear groups, such as countries where production exceeds consumption and Germany, where the reverse is true.

Lexical Resource: Band 6.0

The vocabulary is adequate for describing the chart, with relevant terms such as “production,” “consumption,” “dominated,” and “ranging between.” Some attempts at more formal wording are less natural or precise: “third dominating country” is awkward, and “least producer and consumer” is not an idiomatic way to describe the lowest figures. “Nearly around” is also redundant, and “prominent figures” is less exact than language indicating the highest values. There are spelling errors in “repectively,” repeated twice, and the country name is more conventionally written as “South Korea” or “the Republic of Korea.” Aim for concise, accurate collocations and avoid using several near-synonyms together.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 6.0

The response uses a mix of simple and more developed sentence forms, including the overview sentence beginning “Overall” and the sentence comparing Japan and India. Most meanings remain clear, but some grammatical and punctuation errors persist. “In 2014.” is incorrectly punctuated as a complete sentence; it should introduce the following clause with a comma. In “with United States falling behind it,” the country name needs an article (“the United States”). The phrase “Korea Republic was the least producer and consumer” also has an incorrect grammatical construction; a clearer form is “the Republic of Korea had the lowest production and consumption.” Continue practising articles, sentence boundaries, and comparative structures to make the writing more consistently accurate.
