IELTS Writing Task 1 question

The bar chart below shows the top ten countries for the production and consumption of electricity in 2014.

Summarize the information by selecting and reporting the main features, and make comparisons where relevant.

Student answer (Band 6.5)

The bar chart illustrates how ten countries produced and used electricity in 2014.

Overall, China and the United State produced and used more electricity among the ten countries whereas Korea rep. figure was the lowest. However, Germany used more electricity than they produced.

The highest amount of electricity was produced by China with 5,398 billions Kwh. This figure was higher than electricity produced in the United States and Russia , which stood at 4,099 billions kwh and 1,057 billions kwh respectively. Meanwhile Germany and Korea Rep. produced the least electricity at 526.6 billions kwh and 485.1 billions kwh respectively.

China also used the highest amount of electricity, at 5,322 billions kwh compared to 449.5 billions kwh used by Korea rep. Also, Germany used 582.5 billions kwh compared to 526.6 billions kwh of electricity they produced. Russia had a slight similar amount in electricity produced which figure accounted for 1,057 billions kwh with the electricity they used which amounted to 1,038 billions kwh.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.5

You identify the main pattern accurately: China and the United States dominate both production and consumption, Korea has the lowest consumption, and Germany is the exception where consumption exceeds production. The figures you give for China, the United States, Russia, Germany and Korea are consistent with the chart. This covers the task and provides a relevant overview, but some important comparisons are only partly developed. For example, Germany is described as one of the lowest producers, although its consumption is higher than that of several countries, and the middle-ranking countries receive little attention. To strengthen the response, compare the production and consumption figures across more of the countries and make the overview more precise about the broad gap between the two leading nations and the rest.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.5

The response has a clear overall arrangement: an introduction, an overview, and two paragraphs presenting production and consumption details. The sequence is generally easy to follow, and linking expressions such as “Overall,” “Meanwhile,” and “Also” help signal relationships. However, some connections are mechanical or unclear. In “Russia had a slight similar amount in electricity produced which figure accounted for…,” the relationship between the two figures is difficult to follow, and “they” in the Germany comparison has an unclear reference. The final paragraph also combines consumption comparisons with a production-consumption comparison without a clear organising principle. Grouping countries by scale or by whether consumption is above or below production would create smoother progression and more precise cohesion.

Lexical Resource: Band 6.0

You use an adequate range of task-related vocabulary, including “produced,” “used,” “highest amount,” “stood at,” and “compared to,” so the chart remains understandable. There is some variation in how figures are introduced, but several choices are imprecise or repetitive. “A slight similar amount” is not a natural collocation, and “produced and used more electricity among the ten countries” is awkwardly phrased. The repeated use of “amount” and “electricity” also limits flexibility. Pay attention to standard forms such as “United States” rather than “United State,” and to consistent presentation of country names and units. More precise terms such as “output,” “consumption,” “respectively,” and “exceeded” would help express comparisons concisely and accurately.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 6.0

You use a mix of simple statements and more complex structures, including the relative clause in “countries…which stood at” and the contrast introduced by “However.” Most meanings are clear, but some grammatical errors remain. In the overview, “China and the United State produced and used more electricity… whereas Korea rep. figure was the lowest” needs clearer parallel structure and an article or possessive before “figure.” The phrase “Germany used…compared to…of electricity they produced” has an unclear pronoun reference, while “Russia had a slight similar amount…which figure accounted for” is structurally awkward. There are also punctuation slips, such as the space before the comma after “Russia.” Aim for more consistently controlled comparisons, for example, “Russia produced 1,057 billion kWh, slightly more than its consumption of 1,038 billion kWh.”
