IELTS Writing Task 1 question

The bar chart below shows the top ten countries for the production and consumption of electricity in 2014.

Summarize the information by selecting and reporting the main features, and make comparisons where relevant.

Student answer (Band 5.0)

The bar chart presents the top ten ranked countries for the production and consumption of electricity in 2014. The bars are labeled in two different colors; the dark grey represents production and the lighter grey is for the consumption. The unit for the values is billion kWh.

Let's start with the top of the list country that is the China. The graph gives us significant numbers for the China. The production of electricity is 5,398 billion kWh and the consumption was 5,322 billion kWh. The United States produced 4.099 billion kWh and the consumtion of power was 3,866 billion kWh and with those numbers this is the second ranked country. After that, the chart shows the other super-power country the Russia. The values are not even close to United States and China. Nevertheless, it still at third place in the chart. The Russia was produced 1057 billion kWh electricity while consumed 1038 billion kWh. These are the top three countries in the chart and the production of electricty that chart describes for the other countries; Japan, India, Canada, France, Brazil, Germany, and Korea are, 936.2, 871, 618.9, 561.2, 530.7, 526.6, and 485.1 respectively. The consumption for those countries are 856.7, 698.8, 499.9, 462.9, 455.8, 582.5, and 449.5 in the same order.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 4.5

You identify the chart’s subject and report many figures accurately, including the leading production and consumption values for China, the United States and Russia. However, the response mainly lists data rather than summarising the most important features. It does not give a clear overview of the overall pattern—for example, that China and the United States are far ahead of the other countries, and that production exceeds consumption in nearly every country, with Germany the exception. The lower-ranked countries’ figures are included, but without interpretation or comparison, and the ranking is not consistently explained. This limited selection and development of key features means the task is addressed only partially. To strengthen the report, add a concise overview and compare notable differences, especially Germany’s higher consumption.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 5.0

The response follows a broadly understandable order: it introduces the chart, discusses the top three countries, then gives figures for the remaining seven. This gives the reader some organisation, and phrases such as “After that” and “in the same order” help connect information. However, the progression is not fully effective because most of the response is one long sequence of figures, with no separate overview or clear grouping of comparisons. Some linking is awkward or repetitive, such as “Let's start with the top of the list country” and “These are the top three countries in the chart.” The final sentence is especially dense, making the figures harder to follow. Use distinct paragraphs for the overview and details, and group countries by meaningful patterns rather than simply listing them.

Lexical Resource: Band 5.5

You use relevant vocabulary for describing the chart, including “production,” “consumption,” “ranked,” and “respectively,” and the reader can generally understand the intended comparisons. There is some variety in expressions such as “top of the list” and “third place.” However, word choice and collocation are often imprecise or informal for an academic report: “significant numbers” is vague, “super-power country” is not an appropriate description here, and “the bars are labeled in two different colors” is less direct than describing what each colour represents. Spelling slips such as “consumtion” and “electricty” also reduce accuracy. Aim for precise reporting language, for example “figures,” “ranked third,” and “the highest values,” and check spelling carefully.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.0

You attempt both simple and longer sentences, and the main figures are usually presented in a form the reader can understand. However, control is inconsistent, particularly in longer constructions. Examples include “the top of the list country that is the China,” “Nevertheless, it still at third place,” and “The Russia was produced,” which show problems with articles, sentence structure and verb forms. The sentence beginning “These are the top three countries…” also becomes difficult to manage because several clauses and lists are joined together. Most statements rely on basic patterns, so the range is limited, while errors recur across the response. Practise accurate comparative structures and past-tense reporting, such as “Russia produced… and consumed…,” and divide long sentences into shorter, complete statements.
