IELTS Writing Task 1 question
The bar chart below shows the top ten countries for the production and consumption of electricity in 2014.
Summarize the information by selecting and reporting the main features, and make comparisons where relevant.
Student answer (Band 6.0)
This bar chart illustrates data on the amount of electricity in the top ten countries for production and consumption in 2014. Overall, the data reveals a similarity between production and consumption in all off the countries except for Germany which consumed more than it produced by a slight amount. China topped the table for both demand and electricity generation, followed by the United States of America. In 2014, both China and the United States consumed less electricity than produced, in the data revealing 5,398 billion kWh for output generation and 5,322 billion kWh for usage regarding China, while the United States produced 4,099 billion kWh and demanded 3,866 billion kWh. Both Russia and Korea Rep. both consumed relatively the same amount of electricity produced. Japan, India, Canada, France and Brazil all produced slightly more electricity than they required, which is less than one-fifth of what China consumed. Germany was the exception as it consumed around 0.057 billion kWh than it produced

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.0
You identify the main pattern accurately: China and the United States lead both measures, and production is generally slightly higher than consumption, with Germany as the exception. The figures quoted for China and the United States are correct, and you include relevant comparisons across several other countries. However, some features are only briefly reported: Russia and Korea are grouped together without figures, and the middle-ranking countries are not compared with one another in much detail. The statement that Germany consumed “around 0.057 billion kWh than it produced” also does not clearly express the difference; its consumption was 55.9 billion kWh higher. A more precise overview and clearer reporting of this exception would make the key information more fully developed.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 5.0
The response has a recognisable overall order: an introduction and overview are followed by details about the leading countries and then the remaining nations. This helps the reader follow the broad comparison. However, the whole response is presented as one paragraph, so the overview and supporting details are not visually separated. Some links are also awkward or repetitive, particularly “in the data revealing” and “Both Russia and Korea Rep. both,” which interrupt the progression. The final sentence feels unfinished and does not connect smoothly to the preceding comparison. Use separate paragraphs for the overview and details, and organise the figures into clearer groups, such as the two leaders, the middle-ranking countries, and Germany.
Lexical Resource: Band 6.5
You use an adequate range of task-related vocabulary, including “production,” “consumption,” “topped the table,” “output generation,” and “demanded.” These choices show some flexibility beyond simply repeating the chart labels, and the meaning is generally clear. However, several expressions are imprecise or unnatural for describing data: “similarity between production and consumption” is broad, while “amount of electricity in the top ten countries” and “which is less than one-fifth of what China consumed” are not especially clear. “Demanded” is also less suitable than “consumed” in this chart context. Aim for precise collocations such as “electricity generated,” “consumption levels,” and “the gap between production and consumption”; this would make the comparisons more natural and exact.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 6.0
You use a mix of sentence forms, including a complex overview beginning “Overall” and a longer sentence comparing the figures for China and the United States. Most of the intended meaning remains understandable, but some grammatical errors and awkward constructions reduce clarity. For example, “all off the countries” contains an unnecessary preposition, and “Germany was the exception as it consumed around 0.057 billion kWh than it produced” lacks a grammatical comparison structure and does not clearly state the difference. The sentence beginning “In 2014, both China and the United States…” also becomes difficult to follow after “while.” Review comparative patterns such as “consumed X more than it produced” and use punctuation to divide long sentences into clearer units.
