IELTS Writing Task 1 question
The bar chart below shows the top ten countries for the production and consumption of electricity in 2014.
Summarize the information by selecting and reporting the main features, and make comparisons where relevant.
Student answer (Band 6.5)
The bar chart illustrates production and consumption of electricity in kWh in top ten countries, China, United States, Russia, Japan, India, Canada, France, Brazil, Germany and Korean Republic in the year 2014.
Overall, China and United States were two major electricity producers and consumers in 2014, while least electricity production and consumption was seen in Korea. Consumption of electricity is less than production in all countries, except Germany, where consumption is more than its production.
Firstly, the countries who were producing and consuming electricity above 1000kWh, includes China, United States and Russia, with production of 5398kWh, 4099kWh, and 1057kWh, respectively. However, consumption of electricity remained less than its production, which depicts 5322kWh in China, 3866kWh in United States, and 1038kWh in Russia.
Secondly, all other nations were under 1000kWh in production and usage of electricity. Figures of production shown by Japan, India, Canada, France, Brazil, and Korean Republic were 936.2, 871, 618.9, 561.2, 530.7, and 485.1kWh, respectively. Moreover, consumption was seen slighlty less than production which presented 856.7kWh for Japan, 698.8kWh for India, and 499.9kWh for Canada, followed by France, Brazil and Korea indicating 462.9, 455.8, 449.5kWh, respectively. There was a exceptional country where usage of electricity was seen larger than its production, which was Germany, which produced 526.6kWh and consumed 582.5kWh in 2014.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 7.5
The response identifies the main pattern accurately: China and the United States lead both production and consumption, Korea is lowest, and Germany is the exception where consumption exceeds production. It supports these points with relevant figures and groups the three countries above 1,000 billion kWh separately from the others. The comparisons are generally faithful to the chart, including the German figures. To make the account more fully developed, highlight the scale of the gap between the leading pair and the remaining countries, and avoid saying that all other nations were “under 1000kWh in production and usage” without clarifying that Germany’s consumption is 582.5. The overview is clear, though a more precise comparison of the leading countries would strengthen it further.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 7.0
The response has a clear overall progression: an introduction, an overview, and two body paragraphs that group the highest-output countries and the rest. Sequencing words such as “Overall,” “Firstly,” and “Secondly” help readers follow the organisation, and the figures are mostly presented in a logical order. However, the repeated use of “Moreover” and “which” makes some links feel mechanical, particularly in the final paragraph. The long sentence listing six production figures and then several consumption figures also makes the information dense. Use more varied, precise links and divide that material into shorter comparisons—for example, compare Japan and India together, then the lower-output countries—to make the progression smoother.
Lexical Resource: Band 6.0
Vocabulary is adequate for describing the chart, with useful terms such as “production,” “consumption,” “major,” and “respectively.” The writer also attempts more formal phrasing, including “depicts” and “indicating,” but some choices are unnatural or imprecise: “usage of electricity” is less suitable than “electricity consumption,” and “which depicts 5322kWh” does not fit the intended meaning. There are also spelling and form issues, including “slighlty” and “Korean Republic.” Greater consistency in naming the measure and countries, and more accurate collocations, would improve precision. Use “billion kWh” throughout, as shown in the chart, rather than the less specific “kWh.”
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 6.0
The response uses a mix of simple and complex forms, including a relative clause in “where consumption is more than its production” and a contrast clause beginning “except Germany.” Meaning remains clear, but some grammatical errors recur. For example, “the countries who were producing and consuming … includes” has a mismatch between plural subject and verb, and “all other nations were under 1000kWh in production and usage” uses an awkward comparative construction. Articles and sentence structure also need attention in “There was a exceptional country” and the repeated clause “which was Germany, which produced…”. Aim for cleaner agreement, article use, and more direct sentence construction; these changes would make the varied structures more controlled.
