IELTS Writing Task 1 question

The bar chart below shows the top ten countries for the production and consumption of electricity in 2014.

Summarize the information by selecting and reporting the main features, and make comparisons where relevant.

Student answer (Band 5.5)

The graph illustrates the electricity production and consumption data of ten countries in 2014.

China remains at the top of table in terms of both consumption and production. Korea produced the least electricity, while France has the least consumption in comparison to the given countries. Russia's production and consumption remains equivalent.

China and United States produced large amount of electricity in 2014, 5,398 billion kWh and 4,099 billion kWh, respectively. Whereas, Germany (526.6 billion kWh) and Korea (485.1 billion kWh) generated least electricity.

In terms of production, China remains the largest consumer of electricity, almost 1489 billion kWh more than the United States (3,866 billion kWh). Brazil, Korea and France consumed almost same amount of electricity, Korea consumed 449.5 billion kWh, Brazil consumed 4558 billion kWh, and France consumed 462.9 billion kWh.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 4.5

You identify the chart’s subject and report several relevant comparisons, including China and the United States as the leading producers and Korea as the lowest producer. However, the overview contains important inaccuracies: France did not have the lowest consumption (Korea did), and Russia’s production and consumption were close but not equivalent. The later claim that China consumed about 1,489 billion kWh more than the United States is also incorrect; the difference is 1,456 billion. Some figures are misreported, such as Brazil’s consumption (“4558” rather than 455.8). The response is also below the required 150 words, limiting the range of features reported. Add a fuller, accurate overview and compare the remaining countries and production-consumption patterns.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 5.5

The response has a recognisable structure: an introduction, an overview, and paragraphs giving production and consumption details. This makes the main topic easy to follow, and phrases such as “In terms of production” signal a shift in focus. However, the progression is weakened by an inaccurate transition: the final paragraph begins “In terms of production” but discusses consumption. “Whereas” also introduces a fragment rather than a complete contrast, and the overview’s points are not consistently developed in the later details. Group the countries more clearly—for example, the two leading producers, the middle group, and the lowest figures—and use linking phrases to show the comparisons accurately.

Lexical Resource: Band 6.0

You use an adequate range of task-related vocabulary, including “production,” “consumption,” “generated,” and “respectively,” and the meaning is generally clear. There is some variation in how you describe the data, rather than relying on one verb throughout. However, a few choices are imprecise or awkward: “top of table” is not a natural collocation, and “largest consumer” is used where the sentence is discussing production. The phrase “almost same amount” also needs a more natural form. Check number formatting carefully, since “4558” changes the reported value from 455.8. More precise comparison language, such as “slightly higher” or “approximately,” would help describe differences accurately.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.5

You use both simple sentences and some longer structures, including the comparison with “while” and the sentence giving figures “respectively.” Most sentences remain understandable, but some grammatical errors are noticeable. For example, “China remains at the top of table” is missing an article, and “China and United States” also needs “the” before United States. In “China and United States produced large amount,” the plural subject requires “a large amount” or “large amounts.” The fragment beginning “Whereas” should be joined to the preceding sentence or rewritten as a complete sentence. Review articles, subject–verb agreement, and sentence boundaries while retaining your attempts at varied structures.
