Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.0

You identify the chart’s subject and give a relevant overview: China and the United States lead by a large margin, Russia’s figures are close, and Germany is the exception where consumption exceeds production. The figures quoted for these countries are accurate, and you also correctly note that production is higher in several other countries. However, the overview’s explanation that the leaders are high because their populations are larger is not shown by the chart. More importantly, the response gives little detail about Japan, India, Canada, France, Brazil and Korea beyond grouping them together, so the comparison is less fully developed than the leading-country discussion. Focus on the main contrasts and support the overview with a few representative figures rather than an unsupported cause.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.0

The response has a clear overall shape: an introduction, an overview, and a paragraph with selected figures. This makes the main message easy to follow, and phrases such as “Overall” and “In terms of production” help signal the stages of the report. Some connections are less smooth, however. The overview moves quickly from the two leading countries to Russia, then to a list of six countries and Germany, while the final paragraph returns to only a few of these points. This leaves the lower-ranked countries without a clear place in the detailed comparison. Use a more consistent grouping—for example, leaders first and the remaining countries second—and connect each paragraph’s details directly to the overview. Punctuation spacing also makes some transitions look abrupt.

Lexical Resource: Band 5.5

You use relevant task vocabulary, including “produced,” “consumption,” “production,” and “billion kWh,” and the meaning is generally clear. There is some repetition of “electricity” and “power,” and several expressions are not natural for a chart report: “ranks the top,” “in least,” and “places both in balance.” “Usage” is understandable, but “consumption” is more precise and consistent with the chart. Country names should also be capitalised consistently, as in “Germany.” These choices show that you have enough vocabulary to describe the data, but greater precision and more natural collocations would make the report sound more controlled. Practise standard comparison phrases such as “ranked first,” “was considerably lower,” and “consumption exceeded production.”

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.5

You attempt both simple and more complex sentence forms, including a contrast with “while” and a relative clause in “countries … as compared to the above 2 countries.” The main comparisons remain understandable, but some errors affect accuracy. In “the China and United States ranks,” the subject and verb do not agree, and the article before China is unnecessary. The sentence “The United States the production of electricity is about…” lacks a grammatical link between its subject and the information that follows. There are also inconsistent sentence boundaries and spacing around punctuation. Aim for complete clauses, such as “The United States produced about 4,099 billion kWh, while consumption was 3,866 billion kWh.” This would preserve your comparisons while improving control of agreement and sentence structure.
