IELTS Writing Task 1 question
The bar chart below shows the top ten countries for the production and consumption of electricity in 2014.
Summarize the information by selecting and reporting the main features, and make comparisons where relevant.
Student answer (Band 7.0)
The bar chat illustrate the amount of generation and consumption of electricity in 2014 for the ten countries China, United States, Russia, Japan, India, Canada, France, Brazil, Germany and Korea,Rep.
Overall, China and the United States were the largest producers and consumers of electricity by a significant margin. Furthermore, almost every country produced more electricity than it consumed, with Germany being the sole exception.
China led global electricity figures, producing 5,398 billion kWh and consuming 5,322 billion kWh, followed closely by the United States with 4,099 billion kWh generated and 3,866 billion kWh used. Both nation's figures far surpassed those of the remaining countries.
Russia occupied third place, generating 1,057 billion kWh and consumption slightly less. Japan, India, Canada, France and Brazil followed a similar trend where electricity generation consistently exceeded consumption. Conversely, Germany stood out as the only nation that consumed more electricity than it produced, requiring it to rely on imported power.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 7.0
You identify the main pattern accurately: China and the United States dominate both measures, and Germany is the only country where consumption exceeds production. The overview is clear, and the figures for the two leading countries are reported correctly. You also compare the remaining countries in broad terms. However, some details are less fully developed: Russia’s consumption is described only as “slightly less,” without its figure, and the middle-ranking countries are grouped together rather than illustrated with specific comparisons. The claim that Germany relied on imported power is a plausible inference, but it is not directly shown by the chart. More precise support for the lower-ranked countries would make the summary more complete.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 7.0
The response has a clear four-paragraph structure, moving from an introduction to an overview and then to supporting details. The progression from the two leading countries to Russia and the remaining nations is easy to follow. Cohesive expressions such as “Overall,” “Furthermore,” and “Conversely” help signal the relationships between ideas, and the contrast involving Germany is placed effectively. To make the organisation more fully developed, give the middle-ranked countries a clearer grouping or comparison rather than listing them in one sentence. The final sentence also adds an inference about imports, which slightly shifts the focus from reporting the chart. Overall, the organisation is logical, though some connections and details could be handled more precisely.
Lexical Resource: Band 6.5
You use a suitable range of task-related vocabulary, including “generation,” “consumption,” “producing,” “generated,” and “far surpassed.” Phrases such as “by a significant margin” and “stood out” help express comparisons and emphasis. There are, however, some inaccurate or awkward choices that limit precision: “bar chat” appears to be a spelling error for “bar chart,” while “global electricity figures” overstates the chart’s scope, which is limited to ten countries. “Followed a similar trend” is also less precise than describing the production-consumption relationship directly. The range is adequate and meaning remains clear, but more consistently accurate collocations and careful wording would make the report sound more natural and precise.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 6.5
You attempt a mix of sentence forms, including the overview’s compound sentence and the longer comparison beginning “China led global electricity figures.” Most of the message is understandable, but some grammatical errors remain. In the opening, “The bar chat illustrate” has a subject-verb agreement error; the singular subject requires “illustrates.” In “followed closely by the United States,” the sentence needs a clearer grammatical link, such as “which was followed closely by.” “Both nation's figures” also has an incorrect possessive form, and “Russia … generating … and consumption slightly less” lacks a parallel verb structure. These errors do not prevent understanding, but proofreading agreement, possessives, and parallel constructions would improve accuracy.
