IELTS Writing Task 1 question

The bar chart below shows the top ten countries for the production and consumption of electricity in 2014.

Summarize the information by selecting and reporting the main features, and make comparisons where relevant.

Student answer (Band 6.0)

The bar chart illustrates the production and consumption of electricity in the top ten countries in 2014.

Overall, China and USA were the highest producers and consumers while Korea was the lowest in producing and consuming the electricity.

In China, it produced 5,398 billion kWh and consumed 5,322 billion kWh. The United States was the second country that produced 4,099 billion kWh and consumed 3,866 billion kWh electricity. In addition, Russia was the third country that produced 1,057 billion kWh and consumed 1,038 billion kWh. Moreover, Japan was fourth with 936.2 billion kWh production and 856.7 billion kWh consumption. India was fifth, producing 871 billion kWh and consuming 698.8 billion kWh.

However, for the other five countries, the numbers were similar and lower. Canada produced 618.9 billion kWh and consumed 499.9 billion kWh. France produced 561.2 billion kWh and consumed 462.9 billion kWh. Brazil produced 530.7 billion kWh and consumed 455.8 billion kWh. Germany and Korea had the lowest numbers. Germany produced 526.6 billion kWh but consumed more, 582.5 billion kWh. This is the only country where consumption is more than production. Korea, Rep. had the smallest figure, with 485.1 billion kWh production and 449.5 billion kWh consumption.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.0

You cover the chart’s main pattern and report the figures for all ten countries accurately. The overview identifies China and the United States as the leading producers and consumers, and Korea as the lowest, while the Germany comparison correctly notes that it is the only country where consumption exceeds production. These are relevant, well-selected features. However, the overview could capture the scale of the gap more clearly: China and the US are far ahead of the remaining countries, whose figures are much lower. The statement that the other five countries’ numbers were “similar” is also broad, particularly because Germany’s consumption is higher than its production. A more explicit comparison of the leading pair with the rest would make the summary more fully developed.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.5

The response is arranged in a clear sequence: an introduction, an overview, then details for the five highest-ranked countries followed by the remaining five. This grouping helps the reader follow the data, and transitions such as “In addition,” “Moreover,” and “However” signal movement between points. The organisation is coherent overall, with the Germany exception placed near the end where it is easy to notice. To make the progression more flexible and less list-like, group countries by meaningful patterns—for example, the two dominant producers, the middle group, and the Germany exception—rather than reporting each country in rank order. Also, “the other five countries” is a slightly unclear reference after the first five have been discussed; naming the group as the lower-ranked countries would improve cohesion.

Lexical Resource: Band 6.0

You use an adequate range of task-related vocabulary, including “production,” “consumed,” “producing,” “smallest figure,” and “the only country where consumption is more than production.” These choices make the comparisons understandable, and the key terms are used consistently. Some phrasing is repetitive, especially the repeated pattern “produced … and consumed …,” and expressions such as “the numbers were similar and lower” are imprecise for describing data. “Highest” and “lowest” are appropriate, but more varied comparison language would help you describe the large gap between the leading countries and the rest. Aim for precise collocations such as “generated,” “accounted for,” or “was substantially higher,” while ensuring that alternatives accurately describe the figures.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 6.0

You use a mix of simple statements and some more developed structures, and most of the data remains easy to understand. The sentence “Germany produced 526.6 billion kWh but consumed more, 582.5 billion kWh” effectively uses contrast, while the final sentence combines the country and its two figures clearly. Some sentence patterns are less controlled: “In China, it produced…” has an unclear subject reference, and “The United States was the second country that produced…” is awkwardly constructed. The repeated use of short country-by-country sentences also limits the range of structures. Try forms such as “China produced …, while its consumption stood at …” and use accurate clauses to combine related comparisons. This would improve variety and control without sacrificing clarity.
