Student answer (Band 6.0)
The bar chart gives information about the production and consumption of electricity in the top ten countries in 2014.
Overall, China and the US were the largest producers and consumers of electricity. Both countries produced much more electricity than the other countries. Brazile was at the least figure for produced and consume of the electricity.
China was the largest producer and consumer, with 5,398 billion kWh produced and 5,322 billion kWh consumed. The United Statesranked second, with production at 4,099 billion kWh and consumption at 3,866 billion kWh, which was considerably lower than China but still far higher than the remaining countries.
The other eight countries produced and consumed less than 1200 billion kWh of the electricity. Russia ranked third with the production and consumption at 1,057
and 1,038 billion kWh respectively. Japan, India, Canada, France, Brazile, Germany and Korea Rep followed in decending order. They all were almost balanced.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.0
You identify the chart’s main pattern clearly: China and the United States lead both production and consumption, and the remaining countries are far behind. The figures given for China, the US and Russia are accurate, and the response includes a relevant overview. However, some features are not fully or precisely reported. Brazil is described as having the lowest production and consumption, although Korea has the lowest figures in both categories. The statement that the other countries were “almost balanced” also overlooks Germany, where consumption exceeded production, and India, Canada and France show more noticeable gaps. To strengthen the response, select and compare these exceptions rather than grouping all eight countries together.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.5
The response has a clear overall arrangement: an introduction, an overview, and paragraphs moving from the leading countries to the rest. This gives the reader a logical route through the information, and linking phrases such as “Overall,” “ranked second” and “respectively” help connect points. The final paragraph, however, compresses several countries into one list and ends with the broad claim “They all were almost balanced,” so the progression becomes less informative and the comparison is not clearly supported. Some transitions between the overview and detailed figures could also be smoother. To develop this further, group countries by meaningful patterns and use a separate sentence to highlight Germany’s exception.
Lexical Resource: Band 5.5
You use relevant chart vocabulary, including “production,” “consumption,” “ranked second,” “largest” and “respectively,” which makes the topic clear. There is some repetition of “electricity” and “produced and consumed,” and several word-choice or spelling problems reduce precision: “at the least figure,” “Brazile,” and “decending.” The phrase “almost balanced” is also too general for the differences shown, particularly for India and Germany. Aim for more accurate collocations and a wider range of comparison language, such as “the lowest output,” “slightly exceeded,” or “a substantial gap.” Proofreading country names and spelling would make the vocabulary more controlled and professional.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.5
The response includes both straightforward statements and some longer comparative sentences, such as the sentence describing the United States as “considerably lower than China but still far higher than the remaining countries.” Most meanings remain understandable, but some grammatical errors are noticeable. For example, “Brazile was at the least figure for produced and consume” has problems with sentence construction and verb forms, while “They all were almost balanced” uses an awkward word order. There is also a missing space in “United Statesranked,” and the final list would benefit from clearer sentence boundaries. Practise accurate comparative structures and check subject–verb patterns and word order when editing.
