IELTS Writing Task 1 question
The bar chart below shows the top ten countries for the production and consumption of electricity in 2014.
Summarize the information by selecting and reporting the main features, and make comparisons where relevant.
Student answer (Band 6.0)
The chart illustrates the electricity generation and consumption in top ten countries in the world, in the year 2014. The units are measured in billion kWh.
Overall, it can be seen that all the countres electricity generation is higher than consumption with little exception in Germany because they produced 526.6 billion kWh and it consumed 582.5 billion kWh.
Looking at the chart in more detail, it is evident that China accounted for the highest generation and distribution and the figure was 5398 kWh and 5322 kWh, Korea Rep. comprised the lowest at both categories and the number was 485.1 billion kWh and 449.5 billion kWh. In terms of the United states, they stood second position on the both categories, they generated 4099 billion kWh and consumed 3866 billion kWh.
Turning to the remaining data set, we can observe that generation and consumption in Russia almost equal and the amount was 1057 and 1038 billion kWh. Rest all the countries production and generation both were less than 1000 and more than 500 billion kWh.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.0
You identify the chart’s subject and give a useful overview: China leads both measures, while Germany is the exception to the general pattern of production exceeding consumption. The comparisons for China, Korea, the United States and Russia are relevant, and the figures reported are broadly accurate. However, some features are not fully developed: the statement that all the remaining countries are between 500 and 1,000 is imprecise, since Korea’s production and consumption are below 500, and Germany’s unusually high consumption is mentioned only in the overview. Also, “generation and distribution” does not accurately describe the chart’s production and consumption measures. Select and compare the middle-ranking countries more precisely, including Germany’s contrast with the others.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.5
The response has a clear overall arrangement: an introduction, an overview, and two paragraphs that group the leading countries and the remaining data. Sequencing phrases such as “Looking at the chart in more detail” and “Turning to the remaining data set” help signal progression, and the main comparisons are generally easy to follow. To make the organisation more effective, avoid relying on formulaic transitions and make the grouping logic clearer—for example, distinguish the top two producers from the countries with figures below 1,100. Some references are also unclear: “they” in the United States sentence and “the amount” for Russia do not point precisely to the relevant measures. More explicit links between production and consumption would improve cohesion.
Lexical Resource: Band 6.0
You use an adequate range of task-related vocabulary, including “generation,” “consumption,” “accounted for,” and “stood second position,” so the reader can understand the main comparisons. There are also attempts at more formal reporting language. However, some choices are inaccurate or awkward: “distribution” is not the same as consumption, “comprised the lowest” is an unnatural way to describe the smallest figures, and “Rest all the countries” is not idiomatic. Spelling errors such as “countres” and inconsistent capitalisation in “United states” also reduce precision. Aim for accurate collocations and use the chart’s own terms consistently, such as “electricity production” and “electricity consumption.”
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.5
You attempt both simple and more complex sentence forms, including the overview clause beginning “Overall” and the contrast introduced by “because.” Meaning is usually recoverable, but some grammatical errors remain. For example, “all the countres electricity generation” needs a possessive or a different construction, and “it consumed” has an unclear subject and agreement with the country being discussed. The sentence “In terms of the United states, they stood second position on the both categories” has problems with pronoun reference, article use and sentence structure. The final sentence also lacks a clear grammatical construction (“Rest all the countries production and generation both…”). Practise accurate comparisons and possessive forms, and check each sentence for a clear subject and verb.
