IELTS Writing Task 1 question
The bar chart below shows the top ten countries for the production and consumption of electricity in 2014.
Summarize the information by selecting and reporting the main features, and make comparisons where relevant.
Student answer (Band 5.5)
The bar chart compares the how much electricity was produced and consumed in China, United States, Russia, Japan,India, Canada, Franace, Korea, Brazil, and Germany in 2014. Units were measured in billion kWh.
Overall, it is clear seen that China and the United States were the two major countries involved in the production and consumption of electricity; while, remaining all countries were comparativey much samaller in terms of generating and consuming the electricity. In all countries, the proportion of production were increased except Germany, where the consumption was increased in that particular year.
In 2014, China was the leading country: the production was 5,398 billion kWh, but utilization was marginally less which was 5,322 kWh. United States stand on second number with production was 4,099 and consumption was 3,866 kWh.
Taking a look at other remaining countries, they were much lower in producing and consuming of electricity as compared to the China and the United States. In Russia, the percentage of electricity being produced and consumed were the same.Germany, in contrast, where the consumption of electricity was higher than the production.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.0
You identify the chart’s subject and give a relevant overview, correctly noting that China and the United States dominate and that Germany is the exception where consumption exceeds production. The figures for China and the United States are also reported accurately. However, several important comparisons are only briefly covered: the claim that Russia’s production and consumption were “the same” overlooks their small difference, and the other countries are grouped together without reporting useful contrasts or values. Germany’s consumption is higher, but the response does not give its figures or explain that it is the only country with this pattern. Develop the overview and support it with selected comparisons across the remaining countries to make the summary more complete.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.0
The response has a clear overall structure: an introduction, an overview, and paragraphs moving from the two leading countries to the others. This makes the main direction easy to follow. Some links between ideas are less effective, however. “Taking a look at other remaining countries” is wordy, and the final paragraph repeats that these countries are much lower without then organising their figures into meaningful comparisons. The sentence beginning “In Russia” runs directly into “Germany” without a space after the full stop, and the fragment-like construction “Germany, in contrast, where…” weakens the progression. Use clearer grouping and transitions, and ensure each paragraph develops a distinct comparison.
Lexical Resource: Band 5.5
You use relevant chart vocabulary, including “production,” “consumption,” “leading country,” and “marginally less,” so the topic is generally clear. There is some attempt to vary expression, but several choices are inaccurate or unnatural: “utilization” is less suitable than “consumption” in this context, “percentage” does not describe the absolute electricity figures, and “comparatively much smaller” is awkward. Spelling errors such as “Franace,” “comparativey,” and “samaller” also reduce accuracy. Aim for precise, natural collocations and check spelling carefully. Repeating the chart’s key terms is preferable to using a synonym that changes or obscures the meaning.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.0
You attempt both simple and more complex forms, including a contrast with “while” and the sentence beginning “In all countries,” but control is uneven. Examples include “the production was 5,398 … but utilization was …,” where the comparison needs a clearer parallel structure, and “United States stand on second number with production was 4,099,” which combines incompatible sentence patterns and has an incorrect verb form. There are also agreement and article problems in “the proportion of production were increased” and “the production and consumption … were the same.” Punctuation is inconsistent, particularly the missing space after “same.” Build accuracy by using straightforward comparative sentences, checking subject–verb agreement, and proofreading sentence boundaries.
