Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 3.0

You identify the chart’s subject and give a broad overview: China and the United States lead, while Korea has the lowest figures. However, the response reports almost none of the chart’s specific information and does not make meaningful comparisons across the countries. The claim that production exceeds consumption in almost all countries is broadly accurate, but Germany is the exception, and this important contrast is not explained. The phrase “above Germany” makes the overview unclear. The response also contains only 52 words, well below the required 150, so the task is addressed only minimally. To improve, include key figures for the leading countries, compare the middle and lower ranks, and clearly describe Germany’s unusual pattern.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 4.5

The response has a basic, recognisable structure: an introductory sentence is followed by an overview beginning with “Overall.” This gives the reader a simple progression from the chart’s topic to its main features. However, the response is too brief to develop or organise the information into a clear report, and there is no paragraph presenting supporting comparisons or figures. The phrase “above Germany” also makes the relationship between the countries difficult to follow. Use separate paragraphs for the introduction, overview and key details, and connect comparisons explicitly—for example, contrast China and the United States with the remaining countries, then note Germany’s exception.

Lexical Resource: Band 4.5

You use some relevant vocabulary, including “bar chart,” “consumption,” “production,” and “lead,” so the topic is generally identifiable. However, several word choices or combinations are inaccurate and reduce clarity. “Manufacturing” is not an appropriate substitute for electricity production, while “expensing electricity” does not convey consumption. “The lowest number of manufacturing and expensing electricity” is also an awkward and unclear phrase. Aim for precise, repeated task vocabulary rather than using unsuitable synonyms: describe countries as producing or consuming electricity, and refer to their figures or amounts. “Ranks” is also not the best description of what the chart presents; it compares production and consumption values for ten countries.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 4.5

The response uses a few simple sentence forms, and the main topic can be understood, but grammatical control is inconsistent. In “China and US has a large lead,” the plural subject requires “have,” and “the US” needs an article. The phrase “almost all countries produce more electricity than using them” compares unlike grammatical forms; write, for example, “produce more electricity than they consume.” The opening sentence, “demonstrates ranks from 1 to 10 in 2014 about…,” is also awkwardly constructed and does not clearly express the relationship between the chart and its data. Practise accurate subject–verb agreement and parallel comparisons, then use a wider range of sentence structures to report the figures.
