The bar chart below shows the top ten countries for the production and consumption of electricity in 2014.

Summarize the information by selecting and reporting the main features, and make comparisons where relevant.

Student answer (Band 5.5)

The bar chart tell us about the useage and generation electricity in 2014. The units are measured in billion kwh.

Overall, the bar chart illustrate the informations about some given countries who produce and use eletricity according to their needs. China produce and use too much elecrricity as compare to others countries same as korea, Rep use less and generate less electricity as compare to others.

On one hand, the china produce electricity is 5,398 billion KWh and the consumption of electricty is 5,322 billion KWh. If we see the very less production and consumption of electricty the country is Korea,Rep which is 485.1 billion KWh and the cosumption is 449.5 billion KWh.

On the other hand, Russia and Japan use and produce electricity is approximately near about same. The remaining countries was not much use and not too much prouce electricity. United states the production of electricity is 4,099 and the consumption is 3,866 billion KWh.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 5.5

You identify the chart’s subject and give a broad overview, correctly noting that China leads in both production and consumption and that Korea has the lowest figures. The figures you provide for China, Korea and the United States are accurate, and you also recognise that Russia and Japan are relatively close in production and use. However, the response covers only a small selection of the ten countries, and the statement that the remaining countries did not use or produce much electricity is too general to show their relative patterns. Germany is a notable exception because its consumption exceeds its production, but this is not mentioned. To develop the report, compare the middle-ranking countries and highlight this exception as well as the overall gap between the two leading countries and the rest.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 5.5

The response has a basic structure: an introduction, an overview, and two body paragraphs. The phrases “Overall,” “On one hand,” and “On the other hand” signal stages in the discussion, and the reader can follow the main points. However, the progression is not consistently logical: the first body paragraph moves from China to Korea, while the second groups Russia and Japan before returning to the United States. “On one hand” and “On the other hand” do not clearly express the relationship between these groups, and “the remaining countries” leaves the comparison vague. Organise the details by ranking or by similar production and consumption patterns, and use clearer links such as “By contrast” or “Meanwhile” to make the comparisons easier to follow.

Lexical Resource: Band 5.0

You use some relevant chart vocabulary, including “production,” “consumption,” “units,” and “billion kWh,” so the topic is generally clear. However, the range is limited and several word-choice, spelling, and collocation errors are noticeable, including “useage,” “eletricity,” “produce and use too much,” and “very less production.” Repeated use of “electricity” and “use” also makes the description less precise. Choose standard forms such as “usage” and “electricity,” and use more natural reporting language—for example, “generated” and “consumed” or “the lowest figures.” A wider set of accurate comparison terms would help you describe the countries’ relative positions without relying on vague phrases such as “not much.”

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.0

The response attempts both simple statements and longer comparative sentences, but the range is limited and errors occur frequently. For example, “The bar chart tell us” has subject–verb disagreement, while “China produce electricity is 5,398” does not form a correct clause. The overview also contains faulty structures in “as compare to others countries,” and “The remaining countries was” has an agreement error. These problems sometimes make relationships between ideas difficult to interpret. Practise building accurate comparison sentences, such as “China produced 5,398 billion kWh, compared with consumption of 5,322 billion kWh,” and check subject–verb agreement, articles, and plural forms. More reliable control of basic sentence patterns should come before attempting longer constructions.
