IELTS Writing Task 1 question

The bar chart below shows the top ten countries for the production and consumption of electricity in 2014.

Summarize the information by selecting and reporting the main features, and make comparisons where relevant.

Student answer (Band 5.5)

The bar chart compares the production and consumption of electricity in 2014 by 10 countries. The black bar signifies the production (in Billion kWh) and the white colored bar signifies consumption ( in Billion kWh).

According to the bar chart it clearly mentions that China ranks first in the production and consumption both. It produces 5398 billion kWh in 2014 whereas it consumed 5322 kWh followed by United States which produced 4099 billion kWh and consumed 3866 billion kWh. The difference between the production of China and United States is 1299 billion kWh in 2014. On the other side the difference between both the countries consumption is 1456 billion kWh. United States consumption clearly is less than the China.

Nevertheless, Russia's production is 1057 billion kWh and consumption is 1057 billion kWh. There's vast difference in the usage of electricity by US and Russia. Korea Republic ranks 10th as its production and consumption is very less according to the data.

In conclusion, all the countries are managing to produce enough electricity for their country except Germany it produces less and consumes more by 55.9 billion kWh which can affect industries, people and there day to day working schedule.

Hence, Germany should control their usage of power or focus on producing more electricity.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 5.5

You identify the chart’s subject and report the leading countries, including China’s and the United States’ production and consumption, as well as Germany’s unusual pattern. However, several details are inaccurate: Russia’s consumption is 1,038 billion kWh, not 1,057, and the China–US consumption gap is 1,456 billion kWh, but the production gap is correctly given as 1,299. The claim that all countries except Germany produce enough for their needs is too broad; Germany is the only country where consumption exceeds production, while the others have varying surpluses. The response also focuses heavily on a few countries and gives little comparison of the middle-ranked countries. A fuller, accurate overview of the main pattern would strengthen the report.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.0

The response has a recognisable structure: an introduction, paragraphs discussing leading countries and Russia, and a concluding comment about Germany. This gives the reader a general route through the information. However, the progression is not consistently focused on summarising the chart. The final paragraph shifts into advice—“Germany should control their usage”—rather than continuing the comparison, and “Nevertheless” does not clearly signal the move to Russia. Some references are also unclear, as in “the difference between both the countries consumption.” Organise the body around clear comparisons, such as the two leading countries and the remaining countries, and use linking phrases only when their relationship is precise.

Lexical Resource: Band 5.5

You use relevant chart vocabulary, including “production,” “consumption,” “ranks first,” and “difference,” so the topic is generally clear. There is some attempt at more formal phrasing, such as “According to the bar chart” and “In conclusion,” but several expressions are awkward or imprecise: “the white colored bar signifies consumption,” “very less,” and “usage of electricity by US and Russia.” “Managing to produce enough electricity for their country” is also an over-generalised way to describe the figures. Aim for concise, conventional reporting language such as “consumed,” “the lowest figures,” and “production exceeded consumption.” Avoid adding advice or speculative consequences, which do not help describe the data.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.5

You use both simple sentences and some longer structures, for example the sentence comparing China and the United States, and most of the meaning remains understandable. However, some grammatical errors recur. In “China ranks first in the production and consumption both,” the placement of “both” is incorrect; “both production and consumption” is the natural structure. “The difference between both the countries consumption” needs a possessive form and clearer construction, while “it produces less and consumes more” has an unclear pronoun reference. There are also agreement and punctuation issues in “Germany should control their usage” and inconsistent spacing around punctuation. Use shorter, controlled comparisons and check articles, possessives, pronoun references, and sentence boundaries.
